Many Steam game titles feel alike because developers draw on familiar creative patterns while trying to make a game’s name communicate its genre or mood in a crowded store. That can produce titles built from the same kinds of nouns, subtitles and dramatic phrases. But there is no evidence here that a particular naming pattern makes players forget a game or causes it to sell poorly: a name is only one part of how a game reaches an audience.
Why do Steam game names start to sound alike?
Developers borrow from a shared creative vocabulary
Game makers look at other games for inspiration, and that can make familiar title structures seem like natural choices. Hannah Flynn of Failbetter Games, who reviews Steam store pages, describes the feedback loop this way: “The possibility space spirals in on itself, and suddenly everything’s called Rise of the Bonelord: Origins of Dust.” It is an expert’s observation about creative influence, not a measured count of how often developers copy a naming style.

Fantasy and science-fiction titles can lean on similar ingredients—evocative nouns, dramatic modifiers and subtitles that suggest a larger world. Those elements can quickly signal a genre, but repeating the same combinations makes individual titles harder to distinguish in a list.

On Steam, a game’s name and capsule art may be among the few things a shopper sees while browsing. Flynn calls Steam “a very densely populated platform these days.” A title has to catch attention, hint at the game’s spirit or activity, and remain easy enough to recall and search for. Those aims can pull in different directions: a clear genre cue may sound familiar, while a more unusual phrase may be distinctive but less immediately informative.

Flynn’s view is that “A good name sells the game’s vibe.” That does not mean every title needs to explain its mechanics. A name can create a mood or convey a world, but it still has to work alongside the capsule image and other store-page material.
Why can a name feel forgettable or hard to find?
Similarity makes titles blur together
When several games use comparable rhythms, words or subtitle formats, a player may remember the general impression without retaining the exact title. Trailer expert Derek Lieu puts the stakes in personal terms: “I think the name of a game can be the difference between someone remembering your game and having it disappear into the ether.” That is a useful warning about first impressions, not evidence that a particular style reliably affects recall.

Ordinary phrases can collide with existing names
A title may be easy to say yet difficult to locate if unrelated games, products or other properties already use the same words. The developer of Death and Taxes, Leene, recalled that searches for the phrase were initially dominated by a Magic: The Gathering card pack. In a separate first-person account, Lunarch Studios’ Elyot Grant described abandoning the name “Breach” after finding an existing game with that title.

A subtitle can help—or create another thing to remember
A subtitle is useful when it adds information, such as clarifying a setting, activity or relationship to another game. It is less helpful when it merely repeats the main title’s mood or leaves players unsure which words make up the name. Flynn allows for subtitles when they contribute meaningful context; the right choice depends on what the game needs to communicate.
What do the available title statistics actually show?
An Envato Tuts+ analysis looked at 5,820 standalone Steam releases, excluding free-to-play games and downloadable content. Its accessible page does not establish the sample year, so these figures should be read as historical analysis, not a snapshot of current Steam titles.

| Fewer than two dozen title structures accounted for more than 90% of the sample. | The analysis found recurring formats, including patterns such as “{noun} of {noun}” and “{noun}: {adjective} {noun}.” This does not show how prevalent those formats are in today’s releases. |
| Average title length was reported as 17.15 characters and 2.8 words. | These are averages for the 5,820-game sample, not a recommended title length or proof that longer names perform better. |
| 15.14% of titles were classified as multi-part, compared with 19.17% of the sample’s top 10% by sales. | This is an observational comparison using the analysis’s punctuation-based definition; it does not establish that multi-part titles cause stronger sales. |
| 27.93% of sampled titles contained a “unique word.” | The study defined that as a word absent from dictionary definitions in the ten most popular Steam-player languages. It is the authors’ operational definition, not a general measure of originality. |
The analysis cannot tell us which words are currently overused, whether players forget particular title formats, or whether a naming style drives sales. The available interviews and developer accounts are also individual viewpoints, not controlled studies.

Does a game’s name matter more than its gameplay?
Not necessarily. Flynn emphasizes a name’s ability to express a game’s spirit, while GameDiscoverCo founder Simon Carless argues that naming is often less important to a purchase than seeing gameplay, watching someone else play or receiving a recommendation. These views are compatible: a title can help a game make a strong first impression, but it is only one part of its presentation and discovery.

That balance matters when judging an unfamiliar title. A name that sounds unusual is not automatically a marketing mistake, and a highly descriptive name is not a guarantee that players will find or remember the game. The game’s footage, store presentation and word of mouth can all shape the decision.
How can developers choose a more distinctive game name?
The developer of Death and Taxes says the naming process considered whether a title was pronounceable, searchable, distinctive and informative. Leene also noted: “Name and logo is usually one of the first things a player sees about the game and first impressions are really important.” Those criteria offer a practical way to compare candidates, not a formula for commercial success.
- Start with the game itself. Generate ideas from its theme, activity, setting, characters or a phrase that captures its mood, rather than simply adopting another game’s title structure.
- Compare several candidates. Check whether each is distinctive while still giving the intended audience a useful clue about the experience.
- Say and spell each name aloud. Consider whether someone can pronounce it, hear it once and type it later. A coined word may stand apart but be harder to say or search; an everyday word can be accessible but crowded by other results.
- Search for existing uses. Check game storefronts and general search results for the exact phrase and likely variants. Look for games, products or properties that could dominate results or cause confusion.
- Keep a subtitle only if it adds useful context. It may clarify the game’s activity or setting, but avoid extra wording that does not help explain what the name means.
- Judge the title with the whole store presentation. Consider how it works beside the capsule art and gameplay footage. A name cannot carry the entire task of making the game appealing or discoverable.
These checks synthesize the advice and examples from the named developers; they have not been tested as a method for improving sales or player recall.
