A flagship’s retail price is not simply the sum of its parts. Component costs matter, but manufacturers also weigh supply, product configuration, market conditions, brand positioning, and demand. Rising memory costs are a notable pressure in 2026; how much that affects any particular phone depends on the model and the decisions its maker makes.

Why a phone’s parts do not explain its full price

A bill of materials (BOM) is the cost of the physical components in a phone. It can include memory, the system-on-chip (SoC), display panels, camera modules, sensors, and radio-frequency modules. A BOM is one input into pricing—not a complete account of the retail price.

The sources available do not establish a universal percentage breakdown of a flagship’s sticker price among components, research and development, software, distribution, taxes, and profit. A model-specific teardown may estimate component costs, but that estimate still is not a full retail-price breakdown.

What is pushing smartphone costs and prices in 2026?

Memory costs and availability

Memory prices rose by more than 80% quarter over quarter in Q2 2026, according to Counterpoint Research. That figure measures memory prices, not the price increase for phones as a whole. The effect on an individual device depends on its memory type and capacity, its segment, and the supply available to its maker.

Omdia reported that from 3Q25 to 1Q26, memory’s share of BOM cost nearly doubled in phones priced below $400 and increased by more than 100% in products above $400. Its 1Q26 figures also put memory at nearly 60% of BOM cost for smartphones below $400 and more than 64% for phones below $99. Those latter figures concern lower-priced segments and should not be treated as flagship component shares. Omdia’s analysis describes vendors considering savings in other areas as memory costs rise.

Other components and supply conditions

Memory is not the only cost factor. Display panels, camera modules, SoCs, sensors, and radio-frequency components also contribute to a device’s BOM. Prices and availability can move differently across components, so a change in one input does not translate into a fixed change in the phone’s total manufacturing cost.

Supply constraints can matter even when a quoted component price is not the only issue. Qualcomm’s quarterly filing says memory constraints and related price increases may affect demand from handset customers; it also identifies trade-policy changes as a possible source of changes in demand, pricing, and costs. These are risk disclosures, not a forecast of what consumers will pay for a specific phone. Qualcomm’s SEC filing sets out those risks.

How manufacturers can respond

A manufacturer can absorb some cost pressure, pass some of it on through a higher price, change a product’s configuration, or combine those approaches. The decision depends on costs and availability as well as competition, demand, and the phone’s intended market position.

Adjusting specifications

Omdia describes several possible cost-management choices. A model might use LTPS OLED rather than LTPO, have fewer cameras or smaller camera sensors, or adopt an earlier-generation SoC platform instead of a newer one. Those choices can affect features or capability as well as cost; they are examples of possible approaches, not evidence that any named flagship uses them.

Omdia reported that using LTPS OLED instead of LTPO could save around $3 to $5 per device in some models, and that using previous-generation platforms could potentially reduce SoC costs by 30% to 40%. These are reported examples, not universal savings or proof that every manufacturer uses those strategies.

Changing the retail price—or absorbing costs

Rising input costs do not dictate an identical price change across brands or models. A manufacturer may pass through some costs, absorb some, or alter the product mix and specifications. Omdia’s March 2026 outlook described stronger pricing flexibility and brand positioning in the premium tier than in highly price-sensitive lower tiers. It also identified supply relationships and vertical integration as potential advantages for leading manufacturers. These are market-level observations, not proof of how a particular company will handle a specific cost increase.

Why market price increases do not apply to every flagship

Market averages summarize a defined group and period; they are not predictions for every model. Counterpoint Research reported on September 3, 2026, that existing smartphone retail prices had risen about 15% on average globally so far in 2026. It also reported that new smartphone launches were about 25% costlier year over year. These figures describe market comparisons, not a claim that every existing phone or every new flagship rose by those amounts. Counterpoint’s report provides that market context.

Price movements also reflect which models are selling, when they launched, and where and how they are sold. A global average can therefore move differently from the price of a particular phone in a specific country or retail channel. In March 2026, Omdia forecast about 4% growth during 2026 for devices priced above $800, while warning that memory, macroeconomic, and geopolitical conditions could affect that outlook. It was a forecast at that date, not a finalized result. Omdia’s outlook explains the scope and risks.

How to judge whether two flagship prices make sense

Compare phones on the features and market conditions that can change both cost and value, rather than assuming the higher-priced model has a proportionally more expensive BOM.

  • Memory: Compare capacity and type, where model-specific information is available.
  • Processor: Check the SoC generation and capability, not just the model name.
  • Display: Note the display technology and the features each model actually offers.
  • Cameras: Compare camera count, sensor size, and configuration rather than relying on megapixel totals alone.
  • Market and channel: Compare prices in the same market and retail channel, accounting for applicable taxes and offers.
  • Timing: Use prices from the same comparison period; launch prices and later retail prices are not directly interchangeable.

These comparisons can help explain differences between specific phones, but they do not reveal a complete retail-price waterfall. Without a consistent, model-specific comparison, a market-wide increase or a higher sticker price alone cannot establish that a particular flagship is overpriced.
