Smartphone makers are dropping the physical SIM card because an eSIM lets a carrier’s subscriber profile be loaded digitally into a chip already inside the phone. That removes the need for a card tray and a card reader, gives manufacturers more freedom in how they lay out a device, and lets you activate service without waiting for a plastic card. The change is real, but it is not a universal upgrade. Whether it helps you depends on your exact phone model, your carrier, and whether you plan to move your line to another device.

What an eSIM actually is

An eSIM is a SIM that is built into the phone rather than inserted into it. The phone contains an embedded chip, and the mobile operator’s subscriber profile is downloaded and stored on that chip. The GSMA, the industry body for mobile network operators, describes this as a new way to load the SIM into devices, supported by a standards-based ecosystem. It is not a different network, a different number, or a different kind of plan. Your carrier still provides the service; only the delivery method for the SIM identity changes.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a phone with an eSIM can hold a carrier profile without any card being shipped to you. Second, the profile is tied to the chip in that phone, which is why moving it to a new device is a process rather than a simple hand-over of a card.

Why manufacturers are making the change

Design flexibility

A physical SIM requires a tray that opens from the outside, a slot, contacts, and space for the reader hardware. Removing those parts changes the internal layout of the device. GSMA says eSIM architecture is built to serve diverse markets and regulatory environments, which matters because a single phone design can then be sold in several regions with different carrier arrangements. The reason is layout and flexibility, not a guaranteed gain in battery life, water resistance, or durability. Those outcomes depend on the specific device, and manufacturers have to be asked about them model by model.

Digital provisioning

Because the profile is delivered electronically, the phone does not need a card to be printed, packaged, shipped, and handed over at a store. Apple’s documentation describes eSIM activation as something that happens through the carrier rather than through a physical swap. This is most useful when you are activating a new line or adding a second one. The methods available, though, depend on the carrier and the market, so the process you follow will not be identical everywhere.

Security

Apple presents eSIM as offering better security, and it makes one specific claim: a thief cannot remove the eSIM from a lost or stolen iPhone the way a physical SIM can be removed. That removes one route for taking over the subscriber identity. It does not make a phone immune to theft, account takeover through other channels, or SIM-related fraud in general. Treat the claim as Apple’s, and as narrow.

Scale and product planning

GSMA’s account of mass-market deployment notes that manufacturers used to produce different device variants for different markets, depending on which SIM hardware and carrier arrangements applied. Digital provisioning can simplify distribution because one design can be configured for several markets. Regional variants and regulatory differences still exist, so an eSIM phone bought in one country may not be configured identically in another.

Moving a line to a new phone

This is where eSIM most often surprises people. Apple’s guidance describes limits on exporting eSIM profiles between eUICCs, the embedded chips that hold them. A European Commission interoperability factsheet dated May 2026 describes the 2025 rollout by Apple and Google of cross-platform eSIM transfer as simplifying transfers between phone systems. That is an improvement, but it does not mean every carrier, plan, or device pair will transfer the same way. Before you switch phones, confirm with your carrier that your plan supports the transfer route you intend to use.

Compatibility

Support is conditional on three things: the exact phone model, the carrier, and the market. A phone sold as eSIM-capable in one region may use a different configuration elsewhere. Apple’s guidance is explicit that readers should verify their model and plan with their carrier, and that is the only reliable check.

Using an eSIM while travelling

Apple’s travel guidance describes using an eSIM for a destination while keeping your home line active on the same phone. It also suggests buying an eSIM from a local carrier in the country you are visiting. Requirements vary by country or region, and the guidance notes that residency or payment requirements can apply.

Before you buy a travel eSIM, check these points:

  • Coverage in the specific country or region you will visit, not only the broader area named in the offer.
  • Plan duration and whether it starts on purchase or on first connection.
  • Data allowance and whether hotspot or tethering use is included.
  • Whether voice calls and SMS are included, and whether the eSIM comes with a phone number at all.
  • Whether your phone’s exact model supports the destination’s networks.

Checks before you switch

  1. Confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM in your region, using the manufacturer’s specifications.
  2. Ask your carrier whether it supports eSIM activation for your plan, and whether it can provision a profile to a new device.
  3. If you are moving a line from an existing phone, ask the carrier which transfer route applies and whether the old phone must be deactivated or the profile removed first.
  4. Keep your carrier account credentials and identity verification details available, because a digital transfer may require them.
  5. If you plan to keep a physical SIM as a backup, confirm with the carrier whether that is supported for your plan before relying on it.

If your phone does not support eSIM, or your carrier does not offer it, a physical SIM remains the workable option. Removing the card from the design is the manufacturer’s decision; whether you need one depends on the phone you own and the service you have.
