Some medieval and early modern accounts treated giant tusks found in Siberia as unicorn horns or dragon tusks. Other large fossil remains could be explained as giants’ bones or revered as saints’ relics. These were several interpretations, not a single belief shared by everyone—and a “unicorn horn” could also be a narwhal tusk, a different object with its own history in European churches and collections.

What did medieval people think fossils were?

People interpreted unusually large bones and tusks through the religious, legendary and anatomical ideas available to them. The historical account in paleontologist Donald R. Prothero’s The Story of the Mammals in 25 Discoveries, excerpted by Live Science on October 3, 2026, describes remains associated with giants and monsters, including beings connected to Noah’s flood. In some places, mammoth teeth or vertebrae were revered as saints’ relics.

These explanations varied. The evidence does not support saying that every medieval community—or every person who encountered a fossil—understood it in the same way. Nor did the remains themselves create the unicorn legend: traditional texts and travelers’ reports also shaped what people thought they were seeing.

Were Siberian mammoth tusks really mistaken for unicorn horns?

Some accounts identified the giant fossil tusks found in Siberia as unicorn horns; others called them dragon tusks. That is a report about particular interpretations, not proof that all Siberian mammoth tusks received either name. The animal now understood to have left such fossil ivory was the mammoth, but that identification emerged through later study rather than being obvious to earlier observers.

Were unicorn horns actually narwhal tusks?

Often, the historical object called a “unicorn horn” was a narwhal tusk—not a mammoth fossil tusk. The Metropolitan Museum of Art records that narwhal tusks believed to be unicorns’ were safeguarded in churches from London to Cracow, including examples associated with Saint-Denis and San Marco. The Arctic narwhal was little known in medieval Europe, which helped leave room for marvelous explanations of its long, spiraled tusk.

The label alone cannot establish what an object was made from. The Siberian fossil interpretation and the narwhal tusks recorded in European collections are related by unicorn lore, but they are not the same material history.

Why did people believe in unicorn horns?

Belief drew support from a combination of traditional writing, travelers’ testimony and extraordinary objects presented as physical evidence. In 1563, naturalist Conrad Gessner argued, as quoted by Museum Barberini: “Therefore, credence must be given to what travelers and distant sojourners say: for the animal is indeed on earth, otherwise none of the horns would exist.” His reasoning shows how reports and objects could reinforce one another; it was not a settled scientific conclusion.

Unicorn lore also gave the supposed horn value beyond its rarity. Medieval bestiaries treated real and mythical animals as part of a natural world with religious meaning, according to Brown University Library. The substance known as alicorn was credited with healing and poison-detecting powers. Those were historical beliefs, not demonstrated medical properties.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art records that Lorenzo de’ Medici’s collection valued its “unicorn horn” at 6,000 florins when he died in 1492. This is the historical valuation given in the museum’s account, not a modern-price equivalent.

When did people start identifying large bones as animal remains?

There was no single moment when legendary explanations gave way to a modern understanding. Anatomical arguments appeared while interpretations involving giants remained influential. Prothero’s account describes a dispute over large bones at Langon, France: in 1613, anatomist Riolan argued that bones presented as remains of giant Teutons were elephant bones. Physicians and anatomists, barber-surgeons and others disputed the interpretation, including whether the remains might be a hoax and how they related to biblical giants. The controversy ended in 1618 without resolution, and giant-human explanations continued for much of the following two centuries.

How did scientists come to accept that mammoths had gone extinct?

Identifying a fossil as an animal bone did not immediately settle what its presence meant. Extinction posed a deeper challenge to ideas of divine providence and a “great chain of being,” in which every creature was thought to have its place in a connected order. If all kinds of creatures belonged in that order, the disappearance of an entire kind was difficult to accept.

Prothero’s account describes Buffon’s changing view of mammoths and the American animal he called the “incognitum”: he came to consider that they had perished. Later, Georges Cuvier used comparative anatomy—the study of similarities and differences among animal structures—to identify extinct animals. That work helped establish vertebrate paleontology, the study of fossil backboned animals. The shift was gradual and contested, not an instant conversion prompted by one fossil.
