If a page rebuilds its content to highlight search matches, it can remove the text nodes your current selection points to. The paragraph may still look the same, but copying can produce nothing because the selection was anchored to nodes that no longer exist. The safer approach for visual search highlights is the CSS Custom Highlight API: it styles text ranges without rebuilding the paragraph’s DOM.
Why can search highlighting make selected text disappear?
A browser selection is represented by a range with boundary points tied to particular DOM nodes and offsets. In the bug scenario described by frontend engineer Parsa Jiravand, a search routine updates a container by assigning generated markup to innerHTML. That replaces the container’s existing child nodes with newly parsed ones. If the selection referred to a removed text node, it can collapse, so copying may yield no text even though the replacement paragraph looks unchanged. Jiravand frames the symptom as selecting a paragraph to quote, pressing copy, and pasting nothing; it is an illustrative scenario, not evidence about how often this happens. [C1]
The fragile step is replacing the container’s contents, not the search expression or the <mark> element by itself. Wrapping matches in markup can be useful, but rebuilding existing content for a visual effect risks invalidating ranges anchored in that content.
How does the CSS Custom Highlight API avoid rebuilding text?
The CSS Custom Highlight API lets JavaScript create Range objects for matching text, group them in a Highlight, register that highlight in CSS.highlights, and style it with a ::highlight() CSS rule. The ranges receive visual styling without changing the page’s DOM structure, so the text nodes do not need to be replaced just to show search results. [C2]

Apply search results as ranges
- Traverse the relevant text nodes and find the start and end offsets for each match.
- Create a
Rangefor each match, using the matching text node and offsets as its boundaries. - Put those ranges in a
Highlightobject and register it under a stable name inCSS.highlights. - Add a CSS rule for
::highlight(your-name)to control the visual treatment. - When the query changes or is cleared, remove or replace the prior named highlight before registering the new result set. MDN documents removal through the highlight registry. [C2]
This approach changes presentation rather than the content tree. It is therefore a better fit when the goal is to mark matching text while preserving existing text nodes and selections.

What browser support and style limits should you check?
MDN marks the CSS Custom Highlight API “Baseline 2025” and says it became newly available across the latest devices and browser versions in June 2025. That classification does not guarantee support on older devices or in every browser your users rely on. Consult MDN’s compatibility table against your project’s browser targets before making the API the only highlighting path. [C2]

Do custom highlights provide semantic meaning?
No. A CSS Custom Highlight is a visual treatment of a range; it does not inherently give the matched text semantic meaning. If the highlight communicates important information to users of assistive technology, evaluate its semantics and accessible cues separately. MDN points to semantic HTML such as <mark> when that meaning is needed. [C2]
