Sansa remembers Sandor Clegane—the Hound—kissing her, but the earlier bedroom scene in A Clash of Kings does not describe a kiss. George R. R. Martin confirmed that the mismatch is intentional and pointed readers toward “unreliable narration.” He did not, in the cited comments, give a definitive explanation for why Sansa remembers it that way.

What happens in the scene—and what Sansa later remembers

The discrepancy becomes clear when the novels are read in sequence. In A Clash of Kings, during the Battle of the Blackwater, the Hound enters Sansa’s room and demands the song she promised him. She sings the Mother’s Hymn. He falls silent, removes the dagger he has held at her throat, and leaves. The scene does not narrate a kiss. A Wiki of Ice and Fire’s chapter account identifies this as Sansa VII, Chapter 62.

Later, in A Storm of Swords, Sansa thinks about kissing and recalls the encounter differently: “He kissed me and threatened to kill me, and made me sing him a song.” That is her first later recollection of the kiss, in Sansa II, Chapter 16. The chapter reference also records that she returns to the memory in A Feast for Crows, in Alayne II, Chapter 41, recalling the Hound’s “cruel mouth” pressing against hers and thinking, “He took a song and a kiss, and left me nothing but a bloody cloak.”

The contrast is not simply between one scene and one stray phrase: Sansa remembers the kiss again in a later book. There is also a different recollection in A Storm of Swords: as the Hound lies dying, he remembers Sansa’s song but does not mention kissing her. That contrast supports the observation that the accounts differ; it does not by itself prove why Sansa’s memory differs.

What George R. R. Martin confirmed

Martin addressed the discrepancy directly. In a response recorded October 5, 2002, and preserved in Westeros.org’s archived “Sansa’s Memory” entry, he wrote: “Well, not every inconsistency is a mistake, actually. Some are quite intentional. File this one under ‘unreliable narrator’ and feel free to ponder its meaning…”

An earlier comment, attributed to June 26, 2001 and quoted in A Wiki of Ice and Fire’s Sansa chapter reference, is more explicit about the scene: “You will see, in A STORM OF SWORDS and later volumes, that Sansa remembers the Hound kissing her the night he came to her bedroom… but if you look at the scene, he never does. That will eventually mean something, but just now it’s a subtle touch, something most of the readers may not even pick up on.”

This one-of-a-kind boxed set includes: A GAME OF THRONES A CLASH OF KINGS A STORM OF SWORDS A FEAST FOR CROWS A DANCE WITH DRAGONS "One of the best series in the history of fantasy."-- Los Angeles Times Winter is coming.
  • st of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow.
  • Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse--unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances.
  • Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister--the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Together, the comments establish that Martin intended the mismatch, associated it with unreliable narration, and said it would eventually mean something. They do not disclose what that meaning is. Interpretations involving fear, trauma, attraction, repression, or romantic projection may be discussed as readings of the text, but none is confirmed by these comments as the answer.

What “unreliable narration” means here

An unreliable narrator is a viewpoint character whose account should not automatically be treated as a perfectly accurate record of events. That does not necessarily mean the character is deliberately lying. A memory can be incomplete, mistaken, or shaped by the narrator’s perspective; the label signals that readers should notice a gap between the narrated event and the later recollection.

Here, the textual distinction is unusually specific: the earlier scene shows the Hound threatening Sansa and leaving after she sings, while Sansa later includes a kiss in her memory. Martin’s wording invites readers to consider that difference, but it does not say whether the kiss represents a literal memory error, a psychological response, a symbolic shift, or something else. The safest answer is therefore also the most precise one: the books establish the inconsistency as intentional, not its single definitive meaning.

Is this also a Game of Thrones TV-show detail?

The evidence for the “UnKiss” concerns the novels. HBO describes Game of Thrones as based on Martin’s book series, but that adaptation relationship does not establish that the television series depicts Sansa remembering a kiss. The author comments and chapter references above support a claim about the books, not a confirmed TV plot point.

Chapter numbering and quoted passages can be checked against the novels; page numbers vary by edition. The chapter references cited here are reported by A Wiki of Ice and Fire, which cites the books.
