Investors seeking a perceived store of value helped put upward pressure on the Swiss franc during a period of heightened geopolitical uncertainty in 2026. The Swiss National Bank (SNB) linked that pressure to tensions and escalation in the Middle East—but later said it had abated. The episode explains why the franc can rise during uncertainty; it does not establish that the currency was still appreciating on October 7, 2026.

Why does safe-haven demand lift the Swiss franc?

When uncertainty rises, some investors move money into currencies they regard as dependable stores of value. Switzerland’s perceived political and economic stability has helped give the franc a safe-haven reputation. More demand for francs can push their exchange value higher.

The SNB says investors may accept lower returns to hold francs because of that reputation. Safe-haven buying is therefore one influence on the currency, not proof that every franc movement has the same cause. The SNB does not quantify what share of a particular move came from safe-haven flows.

Interest rates are a separate influence. Swiss rates often tend to be lower than rates elsewhere, reflecting factors that include low inflation and political and economic stability. Differences between Swiss and foreign rates can affect the relative attraction of currencies; they should not be conflated with a surge in demand driven by geopolitical risk. What prompted the 2026 appreciation pressure?

In its discussion of the March 2026 monetary assessment, published April 16, the SNB said geopolitical tensions and escalation in the Middle East contributed to safe-haven flows and pressure for the franc to appreciate. The bank also discussed energy prices and inflation expectations in the surrounding market environment. Its account supports saying the events contributed to upward pressure; it does not isolate their precise effect on the exchange rate.

By its June assessment, the SNB said the upward pressure, which had initially increased significantly with the escalation, had subsequently abated. It also described the franc as having depreciated somewhat against the euro and the US dollar since the March assessment, easing monetary conditions somewhat. The sequence matters: an earlier period of safe-haven pressure was followed by a change in market conditions.

Was the franc still going up in October 2026?

The latest dated official policy assessment covered here was published September 24, 2026. In it, the SNB described the franc as having weakened in the context of its inflation forecast. That is a later signal than the March appreciation episode, so “the franc is going up” should not be treated as a current direction on October 7 without checking newer market data.

The September release left the SNB policy rate at 0%. It reported Swiss inflation of 0.6% in May and 0.8% in August, attributing the increase mainly to higher oil-product prices. Its conditional average annual inflation forecast was 0.7% for 2026 and 0.8% for each of 2027 and 2028, assuming the policy rate remains at 0% over the forecast horizon. These are inflation and policy figures, not measures of safe-haven buying. The SNB also said it remained willing to be active in foreign-exchange markets as necessary to ensure appropriate monetary conditions.

  • Issued And Monetized By The Government Of Switzerland.
  • In 1967, the price of silver soared steeply, reaching 260 francs per kilogram in August and 350 francs per kilogram in March 1968. At this time, the melt value of the 1/2 franc pieces was circa 0.73 francs. Switzerland started to experience a severe shortage of cash, especially in the north, where people were illegally exporting coins to Germany to be melted. In spite of strict measures against hoarding and melting coins, it is estimated that around 100 tonnes of silver in Swiss francs melted
  • The obverse of the coin includes the Latin script with the inscription "5 FR CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA B," designed by Max Weber. The reverse features a woman standing with her left hand raised and holding a bowl in her right hand, with two wounded soldiers lying behind her, forming a cross with the three figures. The inscriptions "1863 1963" and "WEBER" are also present. The edge of the coin has embossed lettering.

How does a stronger franc affect prices and Swiss policy?

A stronger franc generally reduces the franc cost of imported goods and services, other things equal, which can restrain imported inflation. It can also reduce the franc value of exporters’ receipts earned in foreign currencies. The actual effect depends on factors such as pricing and inflation differences between countries.

The SNB has used foreign-exchange transactions in different directions under different conditions. It bought foreign currency over several years after 2007 to slow appreciation pressure and counter the risk that already-low inflation would fall further. Later, in 2022 and 2023, it sold foreign exchange, increasing demand for francs and allowing some appreciation to help curb imported price increases. These actions reflect monetary-policy choices aimed at price stability, not a promise to maintain a fixed exchange rate.

Nominal exchange-rate moves do not tell the whole story about purchasing power. For 2021–2023, the SNB cautioned that real appreciation—after accounting for inflation—was less pronounced than nominal moves suggested because prices had risen more sharply abroad than in Switzerland. Its investment-policy explanation discusses the balance-sheet effects of foreign-exchange purchases; it reports currency reserves of CHF 85 billion at end-2007 and CHF 1,015 billion at end-2021.
