AMD and ASRock traced reports of Ryzen 7 9800X3D systems failing to complete POST to a memory-compatibility issue in earlier BIOS versions on ASRock AM5 motherboards. AMD said the issue was corrected in the latest BIOS and recommended updating the firmware for the exact motherboard model. A system that will not POST is not, by itself, proof that its CPU is physically dead.
What AMD said caused the 2025 reports
In a statement reported by TechRadar on April 3, 2025, AMD said a joint investigation with ASRock found a memory-compatibility issue in earlier BIOS versions for ASRock AM5 motherboards. AMD said the issue had been rectified in the latest BIOS and recommended that users install the latest version available for their specific motherboard model. TechRadar’s report

AMD described the reports as limited and said ASRock had addressed a singular report of a damaged CPU. That statement does not establish that memory compatibility caused every reported failure, or that all affected systems suffered physical processor damage.

What to do if your 9800X3D system will not POST
- Identify the exact motherboard model. BIOS files are model-specific; do not install firmware intended for a similarly named board.
- Check the manufacturer’s support page and update the BIOS. AMD’s recommendation was to use the latest BIOS for that motherboard. Follow the board maker’s update instructions, including any required precautions or intermediate versions.
- Retest before concluding the CPU is dead. AMD cautioned that a failure to complete POST can have several causes and does not necessarily indicate a non-functional CPU.
- If the problem remains, contact the motherboard maker or AMD support. Provide the board model, BIOS version, memory configuration, and the symptoms. The available report does not establish a universal fix for every no-POST case.
These steps distinguish a firmware or memory-compatibility symptom from confirmed hardware damage. A BIOS update is AMD’s first recommended action for the reported ASRock issue, not a guarantee that every failure will be resolved.

How many Ryzen 7 9800X3D failures were reported?
TechRadar cited a user-maintained compilation of 108 reported Ryzen 7 9800X3D failures. In that compilation, 86 reports involved ASRock motherboards, 13 Asus, five MSI, and one Gigabyte. Those figures count reports, not independently verified failures or a measured failure rate. The report also noted that thousands of chips had been sold, but it did not establish how many processors were affected among all units sold. TechRadar’s report
The concentration of reports involving ASRock boards is consistent with AMD’s and ASRock’s finding about earlier ASRock BIOS versions. It does not prove that every report involved the same cause, nor does the compilation show that replacing a processor would prevent a recurrence.

How this differs from the 2023 Ryzen 7000X3D failures
The 2025 finding should not be conflated with the earlier Ryzen 7000X3D incident. In 2023, AMD acknowledged reports that excessive voltage while overclocking could damage motherboard sockets and CPU pin pads. AMD said it was working with motherboard makers to keep Ryzen 7000X3D BIOS voltages within specification. PCWorld’s report
ASUS said EXPO and DRAM overclocking could require higher SoC voltage, that voltage needs varied between CPU samples, and that its firmware updates would limit maximum SoC voltage to 1.3 V. Tom’s Hardware later reported AMD’s clarification that it had traced the 2023 issue to SoC voltage and distributed firmware reducing it to 1.3 V. Tom’s Hardware’s report

- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
In short, the documented 2023 issue concerned SoC voltage and firmware voltage limits; the 2025 ASRock reports were attributed to memory compatibility in earlier BIOS versions. The evidence does not support treating the two incidents as the same failure mechanism.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means when choosing an AM5 motherboard or memory
For a build or upgrade, check the motherboard maker’s current BIOS support and memory compatibility information for the specific board and memory kit. Also consider the manufacturer’s support and warranty process. The 2025 reports do not establish that a particular brand of memory or motherboard guarantees against CPU failure, and they do not identify a universally safe replacement configuration.
