Ryobi, Milwaukee, and DeWalt still sell tools—but their cordless ranges are increasingly built around battery platforms: one family of compatible batteries, chargers, and equipment. That can make an existing battery investment more useful, while also making compatibility and platform choice part of every future purchase. The manufacturers document the systems; the idea that they are “selling ecosystems” is an interpretation, not proof that tools have stopped being the product.
What a cordless platform actually means
A cordless platform is a defined compatibility system. A battery pack is designed to work with specified tools and chargers; it is not a universal battery shared across brands. A broad catalog can make it easier to add compatible equipment without buying a new battery and charger for every tool, but the exact system boundary matters.
The platforms also extend beyond familiar drills and saws. The official catalogs include categories such as lights, outdoor equipment, storage, accessories, and cleaning. That is why “ecosystem” can be a useful shorthand for the range surrounding a battery—provided it is understood as analysis of the product strategy, not a claim about the companies’ sole motive.
How the three platforms are defined
| Brand and system | What the official sources establish | Reported breadth and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RYOBI 18V ONE+ | TTI says ONE+ products share a battery; RYOBI’s US catalog lists batteries, chargers, and compatible cordless categories. TTI describes ONE+ as one of three RYOBI cordless platforms, alongside 40V and USB LITHIUM. | TTI’s 2024 annual report, published March 4, 2025, reports 311 interchangeable ONE+ products. The current US catalog page accessed in 2026 displayed 522 products overall and 519 under its 18V ONE+ filter. These counts differ in date and possibly scope or counting method, so they are not a single trend line. |
| Milwaukee M12, M18, and MX FUEL | Milwaukee’s US FAQ says M12 batteries fit M12 tools and chargers, M18 batteries fit M18 tools and chargers, and MX FUEL batteries fit MX FUEL equipment and chargers. These are distinct system boundaries. | Milwaukee Tool Europe’s current M18 page reports “over 325 solutions” for M18 and “over 400 solutions” across M12 and M18 combined. These are vendor-reported figures on a European page, not a standardized global count. |
| DEWALT 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT | DEWALT’s US FLEXVOLT ADVANTAGE page says compatible tools work with 20V MAX and 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries. Check the particular tool and battery requirements rather than assuming every pairing behaves identically. | DEWALT’s current US 20V MAX page reports 300+ products. Its voltage note says 20V MAX is maximum initial voltage measured without a workload; nominal voltage is 18V. |
What the product counts can—and cannot—tell you
The figures show that each manufacturer presents a sizable cordless range, but they are not directly comparable measurements. The RYOBI number in TTI’s annual report has a reporting year and a defined count of interchangeable products; the current RYOBI catalog displays page totals with a different scope. Milwaukee’s figures are regional “solutions” claims, while DEWALT’s is a US product count. The companies may count categories and products differently.
#1 Best Overall
- CORDLESS CONVENIENCE: The UBFT Battery Flaring Tool is fully cordless, giving service technicians the freedom to work without being tethered to a power outlet.
- MULTI-PLATFORM COMPATIBILITY: Features a built-in battery adapter that works seamlessly with Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee battery systems for maximum flexibility.
- USE YOUR EXISTING BATTERIES: Compatible with the three most widely used battery platforms, so technicians can power the tool with batteries and chargers they already own.
- PROFESSIONAL-GRADE DESIGN: Engineered specifically for today's service technicians, this flaring tool combines portability with reliable performance on the job.
- REDUCE UPFRONT COSTS: By leveraging existing battery systems, there is no need to invest in additional power components, making this tool a smart addition to any toolkit.
Counts also do not establish tool performance, reliability, price, battery life, or value. TTI reports that RYOBI’s business grew 6.4% in local currency during 2024, but that business figure does not show that ONE+ compatibility caused the growth. A larger headline count is not evidence that one platform is better for a particular job.
Why the battery system matters when you buy
Existing batteries can reduce duplication
If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, a new tool in that same platform may let you use what you have. That can be convenient and may avoid buying another battery-and-charger set. First confirm the exact platform and the tool’s requirements: “18V,” “20V MAX,” and a brand name by themselves do not establish cross-brand compatibility.

Platform breadth matters only when it matches your needs
A wide system is useful when it includes the categories you actually expect to buy. A homeowner adding outdoor equipment, for example, has a different reason to value category breadth than a tradesperson choosing a specialty tool. Check the manufacturer’s listings for the specific system and region rather than relying on an overall product count.

How to choose without getting trapped by a headline number
- Identify the system printed on the tool and battery. For Milwaukee, distinguish M12, M18, and MX FUEL. For RYOBI, distinguish 18V ONE+ from 40V and USB LITHIUM. For DEWALT, check whether the specific tool lists 20V MAX, FLEXVOLT, or both.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact model. Confirm the battery and charger match the tool; do not assume that packs from separate systems—or different brands—interchange.
- List the categories you may realistically add. Look for the tools, outdoor equipment, or other equipment you need in the relevant regional catalog. Ignore breadth that does not serve your work.
- Compare the tool specifications for the job. A platform count cannot answer whether a specific tool meets your application, runtime, or output needs.
- Account for what you already own. Include compatible batteries and chargers in the decision, while checking whether the new tool requires a particular battery or has other model-specific conditions.
