Rohit Roy says “dustbin medium” was a criticism of the quality and repetition of Indian television content, not an attack on a particular actor, director or producer. After younger actors reportedly reacted to his remark, he said some had seen a clickbait headline without the full interview’s context. He also stood by his separate claim that several people who commented on television had not worked as hard on it as he had.
What Rohit Roy meant by “dustbin medium”
In an interview on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel, Roy was asked whether television had become more professional while losing devotion to its craft. As reported by Hindustan Times on October 3, 2026, he described television as potentially disposable and repetitive, arguing that the volume and sameness of content left little room for creativity.
In his clarification to ANI, carried by Hindustan Times, Roy explained: “When I say dustbin medium, what it basically means is that we make anything and put it on TV and say that people will watch it.” He added: “Whoever is creative, whoever wants betterment of television, we tell you that the content today we are churning out is not up to the mark.”

Did Roy say he was attacking younger actors?
Roy said he had not criticized a specific person: “I didn’t talk about any actor, director, or producer.” He told ANI, as reported by Hindustan Times, that some younger actors took the remark personally after seeing a clickbait headline rather than watching the full interview.
That account comes from Roy; the report does not independently establish what each actor saw or identify every person who criticized him. The available coverage therefore supports describing his explanation, not treating his account of each reaction as independently confirmed.

What he meant by “They didn’t work as hard as I did”
After saying he had not named any actor, director or producer, Roy referred to “3-4 people who commented on TV” and said: “They didn’t work as hard as I did on TV.” He framed the remark as a response to people commenting on the medium, rather than as a comparison with one named actor.

Roy also said he had television’s best interests at heart and had fought for the medium for 30 years. Those statements describe his own view of his contribution and work ethic; the reports do not independently assess or compare the careers involved.
