Many rodents’ front teeth look orange-brown, and iron really is present in their enamel—but the iron-rich enamel itself does not appear to be the source of that vivid color. A 2024 study found that small iron-rich pockets help protect the teeth, while a thin surface layer is associated with the intense orange-brown appearance. The enamel also transmits color inward, so iron’s role is more nuanced than either “iron makes the teeth orange” or “iron has nothing to do with the color.”
What the study found in rodent incisors
In a study published in ACS Nano in 2024, Vesna Srot and colleagues examined incisors from seven rodent groups: beaver, coypu, alpine marmot, grey squirrel, European water vole, rat and mouse. Using microscopy, tomography and nanoscale spectroscopy, they found an iron-rich outer enamel layer with a structure distinct from ordinary hydroxyapatite-rich enamel. The paper appeared online on April 17 and in the journal’s April 30 issue; PubMed’s record includes the abstract and bibliographic details.
The result refines the familiar explanation for orange rodent teeth. Iron is indeed part of the enamel, but the study distinguishes that protective material from the layer associated with the strongest visible color.
How the iron-rich enamel is built
The outer iron-rich enamel contains hydroxyapatite crystals alongside small pockets of ferrihydrite-like material. The American Chemical Society’s summary reports that the filled pockets account for less than 2% of the iron-rich enamel’s volume; this is a finding from the study, not a general statistic for all rodents. The same summary describes ferritin particles 6–8 nanometers wide in enamel-forming cells. The ACS account explains how researchers interpret the material’s arrangement.

The authors associate the ferrihydrite-like pockets with resistance to acid and a protective function. In other words, iron-rich enamel appears to contribute to the durability of the tooth’s outer surface; its role is not simply decorative.
What produces the vivid orange-brown appearance?
The study’s observations distinguish the color’s apparent source from the route through which it is seen. PubMed’s abstract describes color transmitting from the incisor surface toward the interior through the iron-rich enamel layer. It also says the native color of iron-rich enamel was indistinguishable from regular enamel. The ACS summary, meanwhile, attributes the bright orange-brown coloration to a thin surface layer composed of aromatic amino acids and inorganic minerals.

That distinction matters: the iron-rich enamel can transmit color without being the material that creates the vivid surface hue. The evidence therefore does not support the simple claim that ferrihydrite-like pockets make the teeth orange, nor does it show that iron has no relationship to how the color travels through the tooth.
What varies among the rodents examined
The findings describe the sampled specimens, not every rodent species. Among the groups examined, mice had the thinnest iron-rich enamel layers and coypus the thickest, according to the ACS summary. The study does not establish that this pattern applies to all mice, coypus or rodents generally.

A 2025 conference abstract also describes ferrihydrite-like pockets in iron-rich enamel and proposes mechanical and acid-resistance roles. It is a conference abstract rather than a full independent replication, so it does not establish a new consensus or change the distinction between enamel protection and surface coloration. The ACS summary suggests that biocompatible iron minerals could inspire research into protective dental-care materials or longer-lasting synthetic enamel restorations. Those are possibilities for future investigation, not treatments or products established by this study. Its immediate contribution is a more precise account of rodent teeth: iron-rich enamel is linked to protection, while the vivid orange-brown color is associated with a thin surface layer.
