Ripe banana peels can fluoresce bright blue under ultraviolet (UV) light. They do not look blue in ordinary daylight: the glow is fluorescence, and scientists have proposed different explanations for which compounds produce it.
What makes a banana peel glow blue?
When UV light shines on a ripe banana peel, the peel can emit visible blue light. This is fluorescence, not blue pigment reflecting ordinary light. A study observed the effect under 366 nm UV illumination; a black light or UV flashlight may show it, but results depend on the lamp and the banana’s ripeness and peel condition. The 2008 study, “Blue Luminescence of Ripening Bananas,” describes the observation.
How does the glow change as bananas ripen?
Early research found that peel fluorescence increased as green bananas turned yellow, reached its strongest level around yellow ripeness, and then declined as the fruit ripened further. Very ripe bananas can also show bright blue rings around dark spots. The rings—not the dark spots themselves—produce the more noticeable blue emission.

In a 2009 experiment, researchers reported a fluorescence maximum near 445 nm for the blue rings. With the surrounding yellow peel set to 100% relative intensity, the rings measured 270 ± 40%, while the dark spots measured 15 ± 10%. These are results from that experiment, not fixed values for every banana or UV lamp. The 2009 paper reports the measurements and ring observations.

What causes the blue fluorescence?
The effect is documented, but its dominant molecular source remains disputed. Early work linked the glow to fluorescent chlorophyll catabolites: compounds formed as chlorophyll breaks down during ripening. A 2009 paper used that explanation to interpret bright rings around dark, senescence-associated spots as halos around dying cells. The paper is available in full text.
A 2018 study challenged the idea that soluble chlorophyll breakdown products inside the cells are the main source. Using microscopy, it localized strong fluorescence primarily to cell walls and proposed that insoluble phenolics attached to the walls produce much of the blue glow. The safest conclusion is that ripe banana peel fluoresces blue under UV light, while researchers have differed over which materials contribute most. Can you see it at home?
A UV flashlight or black light can be used to look for the glow in a dim room. One published observation used 366 nm UV light, but not every consumer lamp has the same wavelength or output, and a banana’s maturity and peel condition affect what you see. A weak or absent glow under a particular lamp does not disprove the effect.
