Rice that sticks or scorches is usually a sign to check the cooker’s water guidance, rice setting, batch size, and inner-pot condition—not to assume one water ratio works for every machine. Start with the manual for your exact model and rice type, then troubleshoot in order.

Fix the common setup issues first

  1. Match the rice and menu setting. Choose the cooker’s setting for the rice you are making, if it has one. Rice variety and condition affect how it cooks; Zojirushi lists old or dry rice and inaccurate water measurement among causes of hard rice. See its rice-cooker guidance on rice and troubleshooting.
  2. Measure with the cooker’s cup and water guide. Use the cup supplied with the appliance and the corresponding inner-pot line or manual instructions. Too little water can leave the bottom dry and make rice stick; too much can also spoil the result. Tefal’s EASY COOK RK101825 FAQ and cooking guide directs users to the cooker’s guide rather than giving a universal ratio. Add water only in small increments if the manual supports adjustment.
  3. Rinse and handle rice as the maker directs. Rinsing can remove loose starch, but rough washing or leaving grains in a strainer can split them and contribute to sticking or burning. Panasonic advises rinsing until relatively clear while handling the grains gently. Do not rinse rice in a coated inner pot if your manual prohibits it; Panasonic warns this can damage the coating. Its cooking guidance also says to use the water marks and dry the pot’s outside before cooking.
  4. Check the pot and cooking area. Make sure the inner pot sits correctly, its outside is dry, and the cooking surface and heating area are clean according to the manual. Starch residue can contribute to crusting, while scratches can reduce a nonstick surface’s effectiveness.
  5. Review batch size and keep-warm time. Do not cook below the minimum quantity in your model’s instructions or leave rice warming beyond its stated limit. These limits differ by appliance.

What causes sticking or burning?

Water amount does not match the rice or cooker

Insufficient water is a common cause of a dry, stuck bottom. The right amount depends on the cooker’s measuring system and the kind of rice, so use its supplied cup, water marks, and cooking instructions together. If the rice is hard as well as stuck, inaccurate measurement or old, dry rice may be contributing factors, according to Zojirushi.

Rinsing, starch, and grain handling

Follow the specific cooker’s rinsing directions. Panasonic advises rinsing rice until the water is relatively clear, but cautions that heavy-handed washing and leaving rice in a strainer can split grains and contribute to sticking or burning. It also advises against washing rice inside the nonstick inner pot. Remove rice residue after cooking so it does not build up before the next batch.

Scratches, oil, or leftover residue

Inspect the cooking surface for scratches or worn coating. Panasonic notes that scratches reduce nonstick performance and that oil can cause sticking or crusting in the commercial pans covered by its guidance. Clean gently: for hardened rice, Panasonic recommends soaking the pan in warm water and cautions against abrasive scrubbers. If the coating is visibly damaged and careful setup and cleaning have not fixed the problem, ask the manufacturer or an authorized parts seller about a replacement inner pot compatible with your exact model.

Small batches and extended warming

Some models need a minimum amount of rice to cook well. Panasonic specifies at least 3 cups for the SR-JN185 and 2 cups for the SR-JN105 to help avoid burnt rice at the bottom. These figures apply to those models only. Panasonic also says not to keep warm for more than 12 hours for the cookers covered by its guidance; longer warming can change rice color and smell. Check your own manual for the applicable minimum and keep-warm limit.

If the rice still sticks

Try the same measured amount with a different rice batch, using the correct setting and the manual’s water instructions. If the problem follows one variety or batch, the rice may be a factor; if it persists across rice types and settings, inspect the pot and cooker more closely. Stop using a visibly damaged nonstick bowl and check for a model-compatible replacement. If the pot is in good condition but the cooker behaves abnormally, contact the manufacturer or retailer rather than repeatedly changing water amounts at random.
