Minecraft gives AI researchers a flexible 3D world where an agent can observe its surroundings, receive a goal in ordinary language, and take actions to pursue it. That makes the game useful for studying embodied AI: systems that must connect perception and language to action. But the MineDojo work that best fits this description is a multi-institution project, not one established by the sources as solely Facebook Research.
Why use Minecraft to train AI?
A fixed benchmark can test whether an AI completes one narrow task. Minecraft offers a changing environment in which many different goals are possible: exploring, gathering materials, crafting tools, and building structures. An agent has to do more than produce an answer; it must interpret a goal, act in the world, and use what happens next to decide what to do.

This makes Minecraft a practical simulation for embodied-agent research. The environment is interactive and varied, while its tasks can be described in language. Researchers can study whether an agent can make progress across a range of objectives rather than follow a single pre-scripted route. MineDojo presents this as a framework for open-ended embodied-agent research, not simply as a way to make a game-playing bot.
How MineDojo connects goals, data, and action
The MineDojo framework combines a task-rich Minecraft environment with a large multimodal knowledge base and an approach to agent learning. Its project page describes thousands of open-ended and language-prompted tasks in procedurally generated worlds. An agent can explore, collect resources, craft, build, and pursue objectives instead of being limited to one fixed endpoint.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Learning from gameplay and reference material
MineDojo says its 2022 project materials include 730,000 YouTube videos with 2.2 billion English transcript words, about 7,000 wiki pages, and 340,000 Reddit posts with 6.6 million comments. These are figures reported by the project, not independently audited or established as current corpus totals. The project says the YouTube videos have time-aligned narration, which helps connect what happens in gameplay with descriptions of the activity. MineDojo project
Using MineCLIP as a learned reward
MineDojo’s MineCLIP model compares a gameplay video with a text goal and produces a correlation score. That score can serve as a learned reward signal: it gives an agent an indication of whether its observed behavior matches the objective, without requiring researchers to hand-design a detailed reward for every possible task. The paper describes the method as using a pre-trained video-language model as a learned reward function. MineDojo paper, NeurIPS 2022

Is this Facebook Research’s project?
The attribution in the supplied title is not established by the MineDojo sources. The project site and NeurIPS paper identify a multi-institution team, with affiliations including NVIDIA, Caltech, Stanford, UT Austin, and Arizona State University. The work received the NeurIPS 2022 Outstanding Paper Award, according to the project page; that recognition does not make it a Facebook Research project. OpenAI describes VPT as learning from gameplay videos with an inverse dynamics model (IDM), which predicts the actions taken at each step in a video. MineDojo’s stated emphasis includes its broad Minecraft knowledge base and MineCLIP video-language reward model. Both use Minecraft to investigate AI agents, but their methods and authorship should not be conflated. OpenAI’s VPT overview

What MineDojo demonstrates—and what it does not
MineDojo’s authors describe the work as an initial proof of concept toward generally capable embodied agents. It shows how an interactive simulated world, large collections of related material, and language-conditioned scoring can be combined to study open-ended task learning. It does not establish that an AI can reliably perform arbitrary work in the physical world, or that general intelligence has been solved.
Likewise, the size of a reported data collection and an award are not evidence by themselves of robust capability. They describe the scale and recognition of the project, not whether an agent will succeed at every objective or transfer its skills beyond Minecraft. The cited materials are from 2022 and establish the project’s methods and reported data at that time; they do not establish current software compatibility or current institutional affiliations.
