Renée Good’s family filed two federal lawsuits in Minnesota on October 1, 2026, over her fatal shooting by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. One suit accuses the United States of wrongful death; the other alleges that the agent and federal officials conspired to violate civil rights. Those are the family’s claims, not findings by a court. The reports reviewed describe the filings, but no ruling in either case.

Why is Renée Good’s family suing?

The lawsuits address Good’s death on January 7, 2026, after a confrontation with federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. The family disputes the government’s account of the shooting and is pursuing two distinct legal theories: a wrongful-death claim against the United States and a civil-rights conspiracy claim against individual defendants.

The cases were filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Their allegations have not been adjudicated.

What are the two lawsuits?

Case Defendants, as reported What the family alleges Reported procedure
Wrongful-death action The United States is the sole defendant, according to CBS Minnesota. Wrongful death under Minnesota law, with claims including battery, assault, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence. Family counsel told CBS that the Federal Tort Claims Act process applies and a judge, not a jury, would decide the case. This procedural description is counsel’s account as reported by CBS.
Civil-rights/conspiracy action ICE agent Jonathan Ross and senior federal officials, as described in reporting. The family alleges a coordinated effort to target Somali and Hispanic communities and silence people who documented or opposed the operation, linking Good’s shooting to Operation Metro Surge. The suit invokes the 1871 law commonly called the Ku Klux Klan Act. The reports reviewed do not establish a ruling or outcome.

The descriptions of defendants and claims above reflect news reports of the filings; the complaints and docket sheets were not independently reviewed for this account.

What is the Ku Klux Klan Act lawsuit?

The second case relies on the 1871 statute commonly called the Ku Klux Klan Act, a law invoked in civil-rights litigation. The family’s complaint, as reported, uses it to allege that Ross and federal officials conspired to interfere with civil rights. The family further alleges that the operation targeted Somali and Hispanic communities and sought to suppress people who documented or opposed it.

The statute’s historical name does not establish that the family’s legal theory is valid. These are allegations in a newly filed case, not a court’s conclusions about discrimination, conspiracy or liability.

What happened to Renée Good?

Good was killed on January 7, 2026, after a confrontation with federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. Bystander video captured the encounter. Federal officials said Ross acted in self-defense and described Good’s actions as “an act of domestic terrorism.” Her family challenges the government’s account. Neither description should be mistaken for a judicial finding.
