Reddit banned r/NBAStreams on June 17, 2019, under its displayed “Repeat Copyright Infringement Policy” reason. Today, the NBA offers some free official archived games, but there is no universal free source for current live games established by the NBA’s current viewing guide. Where you can watch live depends on the game, your location, and the broadcast rights that apply.
Why Reddit banned r/NBAStreams
When Reddit banned r/NBAStreams on June 17, 2019, the notice displayed: “This subreddit was banned under Reddit’s Repeat Copyright Infringement Policy.” Contemporary reporting described a community where users shared NBA game streams at no cost, often sourced from League Pass. The subreddit had more than 400,000 subscribers before the ban, according to Sporting News’ June 2019 report.
That establishes Reddit’s stated reason, but not the specific enforcement history behind it. The available reporting does not identify a notice count, a particular rights-holder complaint, or an internal threshold that triggered the ban. The report also gives platform-wide copyright figures from Reddit’s transparency reporting; those figures are not counts of notices or removals involving r/NBAStreams. The NBA offers hundreds of full classic games and other original content at no charge after you sign in with an NBA ID. The archive includes selected full games for each team and NBA Finals series dating back to 1990, according to the NBA Help Center’s guide to classic games and original content. This is archived and original programming, not a free pass to watch current games live.

Current live games
For the 2026–27 season, the NBA lists ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock, and Prime Video as national partners, alongside local providers. NBA League Pass is for out-of-market games that are not available nationally or in a viewer’s local market. A broadcaster or streaming partner may require its own subscription, a TV-provider login, or a local package. See the NBA’s 2026–27 guide to watching games for the current-season arrangement.
The practical takeaway: check the official destination for the specific game and your location rather than assuming a single free live-stream service exists. The NBA’s Tap to Watch feature links from NBA and team schedules to the relevant viewing service. The schedule tool is free, but the service it sends you to may require paid access or a provider login.

Why are games blacked out on NBA League Pass?
League Pass blackouts reflect local and national broadcast exclusivity, and the rules vary by territory. For the United States, local games and all nationally broadcast games are unavailable live on League Pass. The NBA directs viewers to the local regional provider for local games and to the relevant national broadcaster or streamer for national games. US local-game replays become available three days after the live broadcast ends; national-game replays are available at 6:00 a.m. ET the following day, according to the NBA League Pass Blackout Guide.

In Canada, nationally broadcast games are blacked out on League Pass, with replays available a few hours after the broadcast. In other countries, the NBA says every game is available live on League Pass, subject to territory and service restrictions. Check the rules for your country and the specific game before subscribing.

How to find the legitimate option for a game
- Open the NBA or team schedule. Find the game you want to watch and select Tap to Watch to see the official viewing destination for your location.
- Check the destination’s access requirements. Confirm whether it needs a subscription, TV-provider login, or local package; a schedule link does not make the broadcast free.
- Check League Pass blackout eligibility. If you are considering League Pass, compare the game with the applicable local and national broadcast rules. The NBA League Pass FAQ explains the service and notes that pricing varies by package and region.
- Consider replay timing if live viewing is blocked. Replay availability depends on territory and whether the game was local or nationally broadcast; use the blackout guide for the applicable window.
