Reading aloud from infancy gives children and caregivers a simple way to share attention, conversation, stories, and closeness. It can support language, early literacy, and social-emotional development, but it is not a test: a baby can babble, a toddler can wander, and a family can read just a few pages and still have a worthwhile shared moment.
Why does reading aloud matter for young children?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that pediatric providers encourage shared reading beginning in infancy and continuing through at least kindergarten. Its 2024 policy statement frames reading as an enjoyable, language-rich interaction between a child and caregiver—not a lesson that a parent has to deliver perfectly. AAP policy statement
Books create opportunities to talk, notice things together, and spend affectionate, focused time with one another. Across repeated experiences, children encounter words, stories, print, and sounds. The AAP describes shared reading as supporting language, early literacy, cognitive and social-emotional development, and school readiness. These are opportunities and contributions to development, not a guarantee of any one child’s later outcomes.

U.S. population figures provide context, not proof of cause and effect: an AAP resource published in 2026 reports that 55.5% of U.S. children age five and younger were read to at least four days per week in 2021–2022. The same resource reports that 37% of U.S. fourth graders scored below the “basic” reading level in 2022. Neither figure shows that reading aloud alone caused a particular result. When should you start, and how long should a read-aloud last?
You can begin in infancy. A baby does not need to understand a plot or sit through a whole book for the exchange to matter. Show a picture, name what the baby is looking at, pause, and respond if the baby looks, gestures, or babbles. A few pages can be enough for that moment.

There is no required minute count or need to finish a book. With a tired or restless child, looking at pictures or reading one favorite page may be a better fit than pressing on. The aim is a positive interaction that can happen again, not a completed assignment.
How can you make reading part of everyday life?
- Choose a familiar cue. Try a book after pajamas, before a nap, after breakfast, or during a calm play moment. Bedtime is one possible routine, not a requirement.
- Put books where the moment happens. A small, reachable stack near the bed, sofa, or play area makes it easier to begin. Reach Out and Read describes a pediatric literacy model that supports caregivers with books and guidance for children from birth through age five. Reach Out and Read
- Keep the routine flexible. Offer one book, a few pages, or a picture to talk about. A short exchange can be more realistic than a daily target that adds pressure.
- Let the child set the pace. Respond to a baby’s expression or babble; let a toddler point, turn pages, repeat a favorite part, or move away and return.
- Share the reading. Siblings, caregivers, and other trusted adults can take turns. The routine does not have to depend on one adult or one idealized bedtime scene.
- Start again when life gets busy. If reading drops out of the day for a while, pick it up at the next convenient moment. The guidance supports fitting shared reading into ordinary routines; it does not establish that missing a day cancels its value.
How do you read aloud without turning it into a quiz?
Interactive reading means noticing what the child notices and making room for conversation. NAEYC puts it simply: “Reading should be fun, so make reading aloud a dialogue and not a quiz.” NAEYC guidance on reading and writing together

With a baby
Hold the baby comfortably, show a picture, name it, and pause. If the baby coos or reaches, respond as you would in a conversation. You can follow the baby’s attention rather than reading every word on the page.
With a toddler
Follow pointing and page-turning. Repeat a favorite word or sound, add a simple observation, or connect a picture to something familiar. A toddler who moves around and comes back can still take part.

How do you choose books for a baby, toddler, or preschooler?
Choose books that suit the child’s stage and the family’s language, culture, and interests. The AAP recommends developmentally and linguistically appropriate books that reflect cultural diversity. There is no universally best title; a book the family can access and enjoy is a practical place to start. AAP policy statement
| Child or family need | Formats and features to consider |
|---|---|
| Baby or young toddler | Durable board books with clear pictures are practical for shared looking and handling. |
| Toddler who likes to participate | Books that invite pointing, naming, page-turning, or repeating a favorite part can follow the child’s interest. |
| Preschooler | Picture books can support shared storytelling, conversation, and connections to familiar experiences. |
| Multilingual family | Bilingual books or books in the family’s preferred language can make reading more linguistically relevant. |
| Family seeking cultural connection | Look for stories and images that reflect the child’s and family’s cultures and everyday life. |
Libraries and community book programs can help families find books without waiting for an ideal home collection. Reach Out and Read describes curated books for children from birth through five. Reach Out and Read
Does a child have to sit still or listen to every word?
No. Shared reading can be brief and active. A baby may respond with a look or babble; a toddler may point, turn pages, wander, and come back. Follow those signals rather than insisting on stillness or finishing the text. NAEYC recommends conversational, responsive read-alouds, and the AAP emphasizes an enjoyable interaction.
Does reading aloud have to happen before bed?
No. Bedtime is a convenient cue for some households, but reading can fit after breakfast, before a nap, or during play. Choose a moment the family can repeat comfortably; the point is the shared experience, not the time of day.
What if screens are part of the routine?
The AAP’s shared-reading policy encourages book-related rather than screen-based entertainment in the context of interaction. That guidance is not a universal ban on screens; for this routine, prioritize the book and the conversation around it when practical. AAP policy statement
