Razer reportedly spent about $380,000 to give the USB ports on its 2014 Blade 14 a custom acid-green color. The USB hardware itself was not redesigned: the work was in the plastic’s color, including matching it at the factory and checking that it stayed consistent.
Which Blade laptop was this?
The story refers to the second-generation 14-inch Razer Blade announced in March 2014—not a current Blade model. Razer’s archived manual for the Blade 14 (2014) documents green USB 3.0 ports. Razer’s March 13, 2014 newsroom post pointed readers to the Fast Company coverage.
What did the reported $380,000 pay for?
Fast Company reported on March 12, 2014, that a Razer representative put the cost of making the custom-colored ports at about $380,000. The outlet did not publish an audited cost breakdown, so this is a company-reported figure relayed by Fast Company, not a verified accounting statement.
Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan told Fast Company that the company wanted a particular “acid green” hue used exclusively for its products. He also described sending people to the factory to ensure the color mix was right and carrying out quality control to keep the color from changing over time. Those steps help explain the expense: this was a custom color and production-control effort, rather than simply choosing a standard port color.

Was the USB port itself redesigned?
No hardware redesign is established by the contemporaneous accounts. TweakTown’s March 13, 2014 report says the USB hardware was unchanged and that Razer customized the plastic color instead. In practical terms, the ports still served as USB 3.0 ports; the reported spending concerned their distinctive appearance and the manufacturing work needed to produce it.
What the price does—and does not—tell us
The figure illustrates the cost Razer’s representative attributed to a small but visible design detail. It does not establish how the total was divided among color formulation, factory oversight, quality control, or other work. Nor do the cited accounts show that the custom color improved the laptop’s speed, compatibility, or other performance. The evidence supports a design and manufacturing choice, not a performance upgrade.
