In April 2019, moderators of Reddit’s /r/Piracy proposed removing posts older than six months after copyright complaints and fears that the community could be suspended. BetaNews reported that users approved the proposal by a 10-to-1 margin. The plan targeted nearly a decade of accumulated discussions, but the available reporting does not prove that a ban was imminent, that the cleanup finished, or that it guaranteed the subreddit’s survival.
What /r/Piracy moderators proposed
The proposal was to “scrub everything from this sub going further back than 6 months,” as reproduced by BetaNews in its April 8, 2019 report. In practical terms, that meant deleting older posts and discussions while retaining newer material.
Moderators said the goal was to reduce older content that might attract copyright complaints and to show Reddit that the community was making a good-faith effort to address potential violations. TorrentFreak’s report the previous day likewise described an effort to remove almost ten years of history amid complaints involving alleged pirate-site homepage URLs. Those reports do not establish that every URL was infringing or that any particular complaint triggered a ban threat.
How large was the proposed cleanup?
Contemporary coverage described the target as nearly a decade of posts and discussions. That is the reported age of the archive, not a measured count of posts. BetaNews also said moderators expected a script-assisted cleanup to take weeks. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation of when the work ended or how many items were ultimately removed.

Why moderators feared suspension
BetaNews attributed this warning to the moderators’ view of the situation: “the suspension of this subreddit is a question of ‘when’, not of ‘if’”. The wording describes their perception of risk, not a documented Reddit decision that a ban was imminent.
The concern centered on repeated copyright complaints and the possibility that a large archive could contain material Reddit considered violating. The proposed deletion was therefore both a content-reduction measure and an attempt to signal cooperation to Reddit administrators.

How users voted
BetaNews reported that the community supported the proposal by a 10-to-1 ratio. The report did not provide the total number of votes, so the ratio should not be read as a count of participating users or as a formal Reddit-wide decision.

The cleanup involved removing posts, not eliminating the /r/Piracy community itself. Reddit’s moderator help documentation explains that moderators cannot simply delete a subreddit. A community continues to exist and may be requested by new moderators through Reddit’s takeover process.

| Action | What it changes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Remove older posts | Reduces the community’s visible archive and removes individual submissions or discussions. | It does not delete the subreddit or guarantee protection from enforcement. |
| Delete a subreddit | Not an action moderators can perform directly through Reddit’s normal controls. | Removing posts is not equivalent to removing the community. |
| Reddit suspension or ban | A platform enforcement action against the community. | The 2019 reports do not prove that the cleanup caused, prevented, or followed such an action. |
Did the deletion spree prevent a Reddit ban?
The available reports do not establish that deleting the older posts stopped Reddit from banning /r/Piracy. Moderators hoped the measure would reduce risk and demonstrate good faith, but there is no verified completion date, final deletion count, or documented enforcement outcome in those reports.
Reddit’s July–December 2025 transparency report says the company may ban subreddits after multiple removals of violating content or when a subreddit is clearly dedicated to sharing violating content. That current policy context helps explain why repeated removals could concern moderators, but it does not show that Reddit applied that exact standard to /r/Piracy in 2019.

The trade-off behind the decision
Reducing potential enforcement exposure
Removing older material could shrink the amount of archived content available for complaints and give administrators evidence of active moderation.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Uncertain payoff
The cleanup required a scripted process expected to take weeks, while its effect on Reddit’s eventual enforcement decision remained uncertain. Nothing in the cited coverage shows that the effort guaranteed continued operation.
What can be stated with confidence
- This was a 2019 moderation decision, not evidence of a current deletion campaign.
- Moderators proposed removing posts older than six months amid copyright complaints and concern about suspension.
- Users reportedly approved the proposal by 10 to 1, with no total vote count supplied.
- The targeted archive covered nearly a decade of posts and discussions.
- A scripted cleanup was expected to take weeks, but the reviewed reports do not verify its completion or exact scope.
- Removing posts is distinct from deleting a subreddit, which Reddit says continues to exist.
- Current Reddit policy language does not prove what caused or prevented enforcement against /r/Piracy in 2019.
The Bottom Line
/r/Piracy’s 2019 “deletion spree” was a moderator-led attempt to remove posts older than six months after copyright complaints and fears of suspension. It reduced the archive, but the available evidence does not show that a ban was imminent or that the cleanup guaranteed the subreddit’s survival.
