Quick Share can move files quickly between compatible devices, but it is not a universal default because it only works smoothly when both people have a supported device, the right app or setting, and a recipient who can be discovered nearby. Outside that group, you are back to other routes. Google’s “transfers happen in seconds” wording is promotional copy, not a measured guarantee for any particular file.
Where Quick Share works today
Quick Share is built into Android for sending photos, videos, and other files. Google also offers it for Chromebooks and Windows PCs, but the requirements differ by platform, so check the row that matches your hardware.
| Platform | Requirement stated by Google | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Android phones and tablets | Built in; start from the share menu or Quick Settings | Android sharing troubleshooting differs by Android version (see location note below) |
| Chromebooks (ChromeOS) | Supported per Google’s Quick Share pages | Google’s pages do not list a specific ChromeOS version in the material checked for this article |
| Windows PCs (Google client) | 64-bit Windows 10 or later; ARM-based PCs need Windows 11 or later | Android 6.0 or later is listed for the Windows workflow |
| Samsung PCs | Samsung’s own Quick Share app from Microsoft Store | Google’s client is no longer supported on Samsung PCs |
The Windows client is a separate download, so a PC without it cannot take part even if the phone is fully up to date. That is the first reason Quick Share is not automatically the default on a mixed setup.
Setting up a transfer
Android to Windows
Both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet turned on. Google notes that a Windows device without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Extended Advertising may not be discoverable on certain networks, so if the PC never appears, that hardware limit is the likely cause rather than a settings mistake you can easily see.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

PC to Android phone
- In the Windows Quick Share app, select the files or folders you want to send.
- Choose the nearby Android recipient from the list that appears.
- Wait for the recipient to accept on the phone. The transfer does not start until they do.
Distance guidance
Google’s product page says devices should be within 5 metres (16 feet). Android Help troubleshooting separately suggests moving devices within 30 centimetres (1 foot) if a share fails. These are different things: the first is general proximity guidance, the second is a step to try when a transfer will not connect, not a stated operating limit.
When a transfer fails
Google’s Android Help recommends working through these checks in order:
- Confirm Bluetooth is on for both devices.
- Move the devices closer together, down to about 30 centimetres if needed.
- Toggle airplane mode on and off.
- Make sure no other share is already in progress.
- On Android 12 or earlier, check that location is turned on.
- Restart both devices.
On Windows, a receive prompt can be hidden by notification settings or by Focus Assist. If a phone is sending and the PC shows nothing, check those two settings before assuming the transfer failed.

Who can see your device and who must accept
On Android, visibility can be limited to “Your devices” or “Contacts,” or temporarily opened to “Everyone for 10 minutes.” The public option reverts to your previous selection once the window ends, so it is not a permanent change. A recipient can accept or decline every incoming transfer.
Shares between your own devices that are signed in to the same Google Account are accepted automatically. Any other sender still needs the recipient to act.
Google states that Quick Share transfers to and from Windows are protected by end-to-end encryption and that the user controls who can discover the device. Those are Google’s statements about its own design; this article has not independently tested them.

Sharing with iPhone and other ecosystems
Quick Share does not reach Apple devices by default. There are two routes, and they work differently.

Direct AirDrop interoperability
Google announced on November 20, 2025 that Quick Share works with AirDrop, starting with the Pixel 10 family. Its current Android Help page lists Pixel 8a or later and selected devices from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, Honor, Transsion, and Motorola. The page says “certain” devices, so confirm your exact model and software version before relying on it.
For a direct transfer, the iPhone or iPad recipient sets AirDrop visibility to “Everyone for 10 minutes” and accepts the prompt on screen.

Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement said the rollout is expanding to additional manufacturers. Treat that as a direction of travel: a model may be announced for support before it is available in your country or on your software version.
The QR code route
For devices without direct Quick Share or AirDrop support, the sender generates a QR code. The recipient scans it and downloads the files through a web page. Google says these files are end-to-end encrypted, uploaded to Google’s servers rather than your Google Drive storage, and available for 24 hours. Both devices need internet access. This route reaches more people, but it is a different kind of transfer: it is a temporary online link, not a direct local send.
How the routes compare
| Route | Who it reaches | Internet needed | What the recipient does | Stated limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Share (Android, ChromeOS, Windows) | Compatible devices nearby | Not stated in Google’s setup guidance; Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet must be on | Accepts the transfer, unless both devices share a Google Account | Proximity, discoverability, and Windows or Samsung app requirements |
| Quick Share with AirDrop | iPhone or iPad, and selected Android phones | Not stated for the direct transfer | Sets AirDrop to “Everyone for 10 minutes” and accepts | Model list changes; the page says “certain” devices |
| QR code download | Any device that can scan a code and open a web page | Yes, on both devices | Scans the code and downloads | Files hosted on Google servers for 24 hours |
Why it is not the default
Quick Share becomes the obvious choice when both people have compatible devices, discoverability is set up, and neither needs a Windows client or a Samsung-specific app. Each of the following breaks that pattern:

- Charger NOT Included, 6.7" Super AMOLED FHD+, 90Hz Refresh Rate, 385 ppi, 800 nits (HBM), 1080x2340px, 5000mAh Battery

- US Model – Global Connectivity – Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Straight Talk.
- The other person uses an unsupported phone or an ecosystem Quick Share does not reach directly.
- The PC needs a separate app, or it is a Samsung PC that needs Samsung’s version.
- The recipient is not discoverable because of visibility settings, hardware, or notifications.
- The fallback is a QR link, which requires internet on both sides and a 24-hour window.
This is an inference from Google’s documented requirements, not a statement from Google about why adoption varies. Google itself frames the cross-platform problem this way. Erik Kay, VP of Engineering for Android Core Platform, wrote in Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement: “We’ve all been there: trying to send a video from a family gathering to a group of people who all have different phones.”
What “in seconds” does and does not mean
Google’s Android explainer says Quick Share is faster than email or cloud storage, that transfers happen in seconds, and that there are no content-size or file-count limits beyond app restrictions. Those are promotional statements. They are not accompanied by transfer times, test files, device or network conditions, or a controlled comparison, so no published measurement backs them up.
In practice, speed depends on the devices, the connection between them, and the size of the file. Expect a quick local send in good conditions; do not assume a particular video will finish within seconds.
