Prime Video’s ad rollout continued in 2025, reaching additional markets including India and the Netherlands. Separately, ADWEEK reported in June 2025 that the ad load had risen to four to six minutes per hour. That range is trade-press reporting—not an Amazon-published guarantee for every title or viewing session.
What changed on Prime Video in 2025?
Amazon’s 2025 expansion added advertising to shows and movies in markets beyond those in its initial rollout. In India, Amazon said ads would be added during 2025; its announcement page records that sign-up for an ad-free option opened on June 17, 2025. The change did not affect Prime Lite subscribers, whose Prime Video access already included ads. In the Netherlands, Amazon announced that shows and movies would include limited ads during 2025 and that an ad-free option was planned.
These market announcements concern the availability of ads, not a published country-by-country schedule or a universal ad duration. Amazon’s announcements describe ads as limited but do not specify the same hourly range reported by ADWEEK.
How many ads are viewers seeing?
In June 2025, ADWEEK reported that Prime Video’s ad load had gradually risen to four to six minutes per hour. The publication said the range was based on information from six ad buyers, documents it reviewed, and an email from an Amazon representative. Treat it as a reported range, not a fixed specification: the reporting does not establish that every program or session has an identical number or duration of ad breaks.

Amazon’s September 2023 announcement said it aimed to show “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.” In a response quoted by ADWEEK in 2025, an Amazon Ads spokesperson said the company’s commitment was “to improving ad experiences rather than simply increasing the number of ads shown.”
Why is Amazon adding advertising?
Amazon said in September 2023 that advertising would help it continue investing in content. Its official announcement said Prime Video shows and movies would include limited advertisements beginning in early 2024 “to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time.”

Advertising is also a business offering for Amazon. Amazon Ads said in May 2025 that Prime Video reached more than 130 million average monthly ad-supported customers in the U.S. That is Amazon’s own reach figure, not an independent audience measurement. The company has also promoted interactive ad formats, including pause ads and shoppable placements that can present product details and shopping actions. Those features describe Amazon’s advertising product; they do not mean every viewer will see the same format.

Amazon has offered an ad-free option in some markets, but availability and price depend on the country and eligibility. In the United States, Amazon announced the option in 2023 at an additional $2.99 per month for Prime members; its announcement page was updated in January 2024 to say customers could sign up. That is the announced launch price, not a verified current price. For India, Amazon’s page says sign-up opened June 17, 2025, but the reviewed announcement does not state a price. The Netherlands announcement said an ad-free option was planned.

Check the Prime Video account or membership page for your country for the current price, eligibility, and what the option covers before subscribing. The available announcements do not provide a complete, current country-by-country price and availability list.

Amazon’s market announcements distinguish the ad-free option from live-event advertising: live-event sports continue to include ads. Check the details for the specific market and content before assuming the add-on removes every advertisement across Prime Video.

What to check if ads appear unexpectedly
- Your country and membership: Rollout dates and add-on availability differ by market; India’s 2025 change, for example, did not apply to Prime Lite subscribers.
- The content type: An ad-free option for shows and movies does not establish that live sports or other live events will be ad-free.
- The local account page: Use the Prime Video or Prime membership page for your country to confirm current availability, eligibility, and price rather than relying on the historical U.S. launch price.
