A phone that looks faded or discolored may have removable oil or residue, material transferred onto its surface, a scratch or chipped paint, or a genuine change to its material or coating. Those causes need different responses. Start with the cleaning instructions for your exact phone model and finish; gentle wiping may remove a surface mark, but it cannot repair worn paint or a chemically changed coating.
What makes a phone look discolored?
“Discoloration” describes several different problems, not a single diagnosis. Look at where the mark is and how it behaves: a smudge that changes or disappears when wiped is different from a scratch that catches the light or a patch where paint has chipped away.
Fingerprints, oils, and material transfer
Oils from skin and everyday residue can change a surface’s appearance without permanently changing the finish. Apple says skin oils may temporarily alter the color of the exterior band on specified iPhone models; for those models, it advises wiping with a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth. Apple also notes that material transfer on certain textured glass or Ceramic Shield surfaces can resemble a scratch and can be removed in most cases. These examples are specific to the surfaces and models Apple describes, not a guarantee for every phone. Apple’s iPhone cleaning instructions explain the model-specific guidance.
Friction, scratches, and chipped paint
Repeated contact with hard objects can scratch a phone, wear its finish, or chip paint on metal or plastic rear covers and frames. Huawei identifies tables and objects carried in pockets or bags as possible sources of contact wear, and says frequent insertion and removal of a SIM or memory card can wear the surrounding area. Marks can stand out more on dark or glossy finishes because the damaged area contrasts with the rest of the surface. Huawei’s guidance on chipped paint, scratches, and white marks covers these cases.

Material or coating changes
Some materials can change appearance with exposure or use, but the explanation depends on the specific surface. Xiaomi says the anodized metal decorative parts of the POCO X7 Pro may experience slight color change over time with exposure to air, humidity, and UV light, without affecting function or structural integrity. That is a model-specific statement, not a universal explanation for fading phones. Xiaomi’s POCO X7 Pro FAQ describes the affected parts.
Wear can also affect a coating. Apple says an iPhone’s fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating wears over time with normal use. That does not mean every color change is coating wear, but it is one reason a surface may look or feel different as a phone ages. Apple’s cleaning guidance explains the coating.

Can you clean discoloration off a phone?
Sometimes. Gentle cleaning may help with ordinary dirt, surface oil, or removable material transfer. It will not restore paint that has chipped away, remove a scratch from the underlying surface, or reliably reverse a coating or material change. Avoid polishing or applying a chemical treatment unless the phone maker specifically approves it for your model and finish.

Check the phone maker’s support guidance for your exact model and material before choosing a cleaner. Do not assume instructions for one phone or case apply to another.
- Start with a soft cloth. Follow the maker’s instructions. Apple advises a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth for its specified cleaning guidance; Belkin recommends a soft microfiber cloth for its cases. Keep moisture away from openings.
- Stop if the mark remains or the surface changes. Do not scrub harder or escalate to solvents, abrasives, bleach, or acetone. A persistent mark may be damage rather than residue, and an unapproved cleaner can make it worse.
Cleaning advice is product-specific. For example, Xiaomi warns that alcohol above 75% can react with the PU-leather coating on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra battery cover, causing swelling, discoloration, or peeling, and recommends a soft cloth and mild cleaning solutions for that surface. Apple’s instructions permit certain alcohol wipes for specified disinfection use while warning against other products and abrasives. Neither instruction should be generalized to every phone. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi 17 Ultra FAQ describes its PU-leather cover warning; consult the applicable maker’s guidance before disinfecting any device.

Why can a phone case change color?
A case has its own material and wear patterns, so it may discolor even when the phone beneath it is unchanged. HONOR notes that protective cases and flip covers naturally wear and may change color; it says color changes do not compromise their protection performance. Belkin says sunlight, heat, and some chemicals can affect the appearance of its cases over time. For certain soft-touch areas, hand oils can make the surface look shiny; Belkin says microfiber cleaning usually restores their appearance. How to reduce wear and prevent avoidable discoloration
- Use a compatible case. A case made for your exact phone can reduce direct contact with hard objects, though it cannot prevent every type of finish or case color change.
- Keep the case clean. Remove it periodically and check for dirt or grit inside, which can rub against the phone. Clean the case according to its maker’s instructions and let it dry fully before reinstalling it.
- Avoid unnecessary exposure. Follow the case maker’s advice about heat, sunlight, dyes, cosmetics, lotions, and chemicals. Belkin’s guidance for its cases recommends avoiding prolonged heat and contact with dyes, cosmetics, and lotions.
- Use approved cleaning methods. Do not use rough pads or harsh cleaners on the assumption that a stronger treatment will remove a mark. The wrong product can damage a finish or coating.
Belkin’s clear-case instructions recommend removing the case and cleaning gently with microfiber and water or mild soap as appropriate, then letting it dry fully before putting it back on. Follow the instructions for your own case rather than treating this as a universal method. Belkin’s clear-case guide includes its care recommendations. When should you seek service or replace the case?
If the phone’s finish is scratched or its paint has chipped, cleaning is unlikely to restore the original appearance. A permanently discolored case can be replaced if its appearance matters to you; color change alone does not necessarily mean it has stopped protecting the phone. If wear affects normal use, Huawei advises backing up the device and contacting an authorized service center.
