Elon Musk’s enthusiasm for giant spaceships and a real-world Starfleet overlaps with Star Trek’s spirit of exploration. The tension is that the franchise’s vision is not only about getting to other planets: its official legacy also emphasizes diversity, inclusion, curiosity and social imagination. His joke about the diverse cast of Starfleet Academy puts that tension in view, but it does not prove he rejects every idea in the franchise.

What is the point of Star Trek?

Star Trek imagines exploration as both a technological and a human project. Its starships travel into the unknown, but the people aboard them represent different cultures and species working together. Paramount’s current franchise description explicitly connects the series with “Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations,” cultural diversity and inclusion, scientific exploration, and uncharted frontiers. That is the rights-holder’s framing of the legacy, rather than a neutral academic account of the franchise’s history. Paramount’s franchise description

That social imagination is not an add-on to the technology. The imagined future asks what people might do with scientific progress and what a society might look like when cooperation across difference is normal. A story can be criticized for a particular character, script or creative decision without making diversity itself a departure from the franchise’s stated themes.

Where Musk’s stated vision overlaps with Star Trek

Musk has repeatedly expressed a desire to make spacefaring science fiction real. In a 2026 World Economic Forum conversation, he said, “And we want to have Starfleet and Star Trek, really, for real, where we actually have giant spaceships traveling through space, going to other planets.” World Economic Forum conversation

In a 2026 interview with The Economist, he said, “I sort of want the Star Trek Star wars future,” while discussing a spacefaring civilization and science fiction that is not dystopian. Those comments establish an affinity for the exploratory, optimistic and technological side of the genre; they do not establish that he endorses every social idea associated with Star Trek. What prompted the “missed the point” criticism?

In January 2026, Musk shared a clip from Starfleet Academy and made a joke about the characters’ appearance. Fast Company reported his comment: “Turns out they banned Ozempic and LASIK in the future. lol.” Fast Company’s report

The joke can be read as targeting the actors’ bodies and appearances rather than the show’s storytelling. That is why it struck critics as at odds with a franchise whose official description foregrounds cultural diversity and inclusion, and whose new academy premise brings cadets of varied backgrounds and species together around “a common dream of hope and optimism.” StarTrek.com’s Starfleet Academy announcement

That is a specific point of tension, not proof of Musk’s complete worldview or a reliable account of every reason someone might dislike the series. A viewer can object to execution or taste without rejecting inclusion, and one social-media post cannot establish a person’s full understanding of a long-running franchise.

Why diversity and renewal are part of the franchise’s own account

The franchise’s history includes an explicit emphasis on trying new things rather than merely repeating the original. In StarTrek.com’s account of Gene Roddenberry’s 1986 press conference announcing The Next Generation, Roddenberry is quoted saying, “We must continue to talk about exciting and different things.” StarTrek.com’s account of Roddenberry’s 1986 announcement

The official Starfleet Academy announcement describes cadets from varied backgrounds and species, including a Klingon, joining in an optimistic common purpose. That premise makes difference part of the world and cast as described by the franchise. It does not, by itself, determine whether the show’s individual creative choices succeed; it does explain why mocking visible difference can seem to conflict with what Star Trek says it is trying to imagine.

What the controversy does—and does not—show

  • Technology and exploration: Musk’s public comments celebrate giant spacecraft, other planets and the prospect of making science fiction real.
  • Social imagination: Paramount’s official framing of Star Trek pairs exploration with inclusion, diversity, inquiry and new ideas.

There is meaningful overlap: both visions express optimism about a spacefaring future. The friction arises when commentary about a diverse new cast appears to make the visible differences themselves the punchline. The available statements support that comparison, but not the broader claim that Musk opposes all of Star Trek’s values or that his post caused any later outcome for the show.

For context, Paramount and CBS Studios said in a 2025 announcement that the franchise’s 60th anniversary would be celebrated in 2026, with the anniversary date on September 8, 2026. The same official description listed 11 television series, 14 films and more than 900 episodes. Those figures show the scale of a franchise with many stories and creative eras; they do not make every installment identical in tone or quality. Paramount’s 2025 anniversary announcement
