Outdoor tornado sirens are meant to alert people who are outside, not to serve as a dependable warning system inside a home. For indoor alerts, keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled on your phone and consider an alert-capable NOAA Weather Radio. If a tornado warning arrives, take shelter promptly rather than waiting to hear a siren.
Why may tornado sirens be hard to hear indoors?
Sirens are outdoor warning devices. The National Weather Service Quad Cities says they are designed to alert people outside that something dangerous is approaching, and advises people who hear one to go inside and tune to local media for more information. They are not a reliable way to know whether a person indoors has received a warning.
Whether a siren can be heard inside depends on circumstances, and the reviewed official guidance does not establish a percentage, distance, or guarantee for indoor audibility. Do not assume you will hear one through your home’s walls, windows, or other barriers—or that hearing it is the only way a warning will reach you.
What should you use for indoor alerts?
Wireless Emergency Alerts on a phone
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are free notifications delivered to compatible phones in a threat area. The National Weather Service says they do not require an app or subscription. Keep alerts enabled in your phone’s settings; the exact menu labels vary by phone and software version. WEA is a useful alert channel, but no single device or service should be treated as guaranteed.

NOAA Weather Radio with alert capability
A NOAA Weather Radio All-Hazards receiver can provide audible or visual alerts. Look for a compatible receiver with alert capability, including SAME or 1050 Hz tone-alert support, and follow its manufacturer instructions for setup. SAME can help configure alerts for selected areas.
NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts on VHF frequencies from 162.400 to 162.550 MHz, so an ordinary AM/FM radio cannot receive those broadcasts. Check whether a local transmitter covers your area before relying on a receiver. Guidance and coverage information are available from the National Weather Service’s NOAA Weather Radio page.

Other local warning channels
Local TV and radio, weather apps, websites, and community alert services can provide additional information. Which services are available varies by location. Use them as complementary channels, and check local officials’ guidance for the systems offered in your community.
Should you get a weather radio if you already receive phone alerts?
Phone WEA and an alert-capable weather radio are complementary options, not an either-or choice. WEA is a no-cost phone notification channel that needs no app or subscription; a weather radio offers audible or visual alerts from a dedicated receiver, subject to local transmitter coverage and correct setup. Consider which channels are accessible to your household, including when phones are not nearby or alerts might be missed. No channel is a guarantee, so layers can improve access to warning information.

Will a tornado siren wake you at night?
Do not count on an outdoor siren to wake you indoors. For overnight awareness, use enabled phone alerts and consider an alert-capable NOAA Weather Radio configured according to its instructions. The National Weather Service recommends weather radio for indoor alerts; it does not establish that any particular device will always wake every sleeper.
What should you do when a warning arrives?
A tornado warning is a prompt to take protective action. At home, go to a basement, a safe room, or an interior room away from windows. At work or school, follow the practiced plan and move to the designated shelter. Do not wait for an outdoor siren before sheltering; use the warning information you receive and act promptly. See the National Weather Service’s tornado safety guidance.

Why do siren policies differ by community?
Local authorities set siren activation and testing policies, and those rules vary by jurisdiction. A siren may be used for hazards beyond tornadoes, depending on local policy, so do not assume every activation means a tornado specifically. Find out what triggers sirens and how tests are announced where you live by checking your local emergency-management office or municipality.

A siren stopping is not an all-clear. Continue monitoring official local updates; the National Weather Service Quad Cities FAQ notes that its sirens do not provide an all-clear signal. Its local practices are not a national rule, so follow your community’s instructions.
