Two independent research teams identified a roughly 5-kilobase deletion in the X-linked gene ARHGAP36 that is associated with orange fur in domestic cats. The finding, published in Current Biology in 2025, answers a genetics question that had remained open since scientists linked orange coat color to the X chromosome in 1961. It was not one team searching continuously for 60 years.
What did scientists discover about orange cats?
The orange variant is associated with a deletion in ARHGAP36, a gene on the X chromosome. The deletion is non-coding: it does not remove instructions for making part of the gene’s protein. OMIA describes it as a 5.1-kilobase intronic deletion, while the National Institute of Genetics rounded it to about 5,000 DNA bases in its 2025 announcement.
The Kyushu University team, led by geneticist Hiroyuki Sasaki, first compared DNA from 18 cats—10 orange and eight non-orange—and then reported that the association also held in 49 additional cats, including samples from an international cat genome database. Those are study sample counts, not estimates of the share of orange cats in the wider population. An independent Stanford-led team reported the same gene and a similar deletion in the same journal issue. The two papers provide independent corroboration, not a single combined experiment.

The orange locus had been narrowed through earlier genetic mapping; OMIA notes that a 2018 study placed it within a 1.5-megabase interval. That interval was a historical mapping region, not the size of the deletion now associated with orange fur.

Why are orange cats usually male?
The usual explanation follows from how the orange variant is inherited on the X chromosome. In the common XX/XY pattern, an XY male has one X chromosome. If that X carries the orange variant, he can have an orange coat. An XX female generally needs the orange variant on both X chromosomes to be uniformly orange.
This describes the usual pattern, not every cat: sex chromosomes and development can vary, so “usually” is more accurate than “always.” The available sources do not establish a reliable population-level percentage for how many orange cats are male.

Why do many female cats have tortoiseshell or calico coats?
An XX female with different variants on her two X chromosomes—orange on one and non-orange on the other—can develop a mosaic coat. Early in development, different cell lineages switch off different X chromosomes. Descendant pigment cells then express one variant or the other, creating orange and darker patches. This process is called X inactivation.

Calico is not simply another name for the orange variant. White spotting is a separate factor that contributes the larger white areas typical of calico coats; the orange locus explains the orange-versus-dark color pattern, not the white patches. Tortoiseshell cats usually show the orange-and-dark mosaic without the same prominent white areas.

How strong is the evidence, and what is not yet explained?
The Japanese team found higher ARHGAP36 activity in melanocytes from sampled orange patches and reported changes in the activity of pigment-related genes. Together with the deletion’s association with coat color and the independent Stanford result, this supports identifying ARHGAP36 as the orange-color gene. The precise downstream process by which altered gene activity shifts pigment toward orange is not fully understood.
The finding also does not establish a link between orange fur and personality. Sasaki told Kyushu University in its 2025-05-15 release that there is “no scientific evidence” for such a connection.
