OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and research vice president Barret Zoph announced they were leaving the company on September 25, 2024. Their public explanations differed: Murati wanted time for her own exploration, McGrew wanted a break, and Zoph described a personal career decision. CEO Sam Altman said their decisions were independent and amicable, but the announcements do not establish a shared or undisclosed reason for the departures.
What happened on September 25, 2024?
Murati announced her departure first. Later that day, Altman said McGrew and Zoph were also leaving. The Associated Press reported Altman describing the decisions as made “independently of each other and amicably.” That is Altman’s characterization of the transition, not proof of what privately motivated each executive.
The three held different roles: Murati was OpenAI’s chief technology officer, McGrew its chief research officer, and Zoph a vice president of research. The announcements came at different points in the day and included separate explanations rather than a common stated rationale.
Why did Mira Murati say she was leaving?
As quoted by the Associated Press, Murati said: “I’m stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration.” Axios reported that she had been at OpenAI for six and a half years. Her statement describes her own reason; it does not explain the departures of McGrew or Zoph.

What did Bob McGrew and Barret Zoph say?
Bob McGrew
McGrew said he wanted “time for [him] to take a break,” according to TechCrunch. The outlet reported that he joined OpenAI in January 2017, became a vice president of research in 2018, and later served as chief research officer. TechCrunch also quoted him describing his tenure as “The last eight years”; that is his rounded wording, not an exact duration calculated from a start date.
Barret Zoph
Zoph described the timing as a personal career decision and a chance to explore opportunities outside OpenAI. TechCrunch reported that he led the post-training team, which works on training and improving models before deployment. That role does not establish that a particular model, product, or technical disagreement prompted his departure.
How did OpenAI frame the leadership transition?
Altman called leadership changes a natural part of companies, particularly fast-growing and demanding ones, according to TechCrunch. He said the timing would allow a smooth transition. As part of the research leadership changes, Mark Chen was named senior vice president of research and Jakub Pachocki chief scientist, according to Axios and TechCrunch.
Those appointments describe a research leadership handover; the cited reports do not identify a one-for-one successor to Murati as CTO. They also do not establish that Chen or Pachocki took over all of any departing executive’s responsibilities.
Rank #3
Why was Murati’s departure especially notable?
Murati had been a prominent OpenAI leader before the 2024 announcement. On November 17, 2023, OpenAI announced that she would serve as interim CEO after Altman’s departure, describing her then as already leading research, product, and safety functions. That earlier appointment helps explain her public profile, but it does not show that the 2023 board dispute was connected to her later decision to leave.

They establish what the three executives and Altman said publicly, not a definitive private motive beyond those attributed explanations. TechCrunch noted the announcements coincided with reports about a possible corporate restructuring and a new funding round. Coincidence in timing does not demonstrate that either development caused the departures. The available reporting likewise does not establish a shared cause such as conflict, safety disagreements, or dissatisfaction.
