Businesses can accept Monero (XMR) through a simple wallet address or QR code, or automate checkout with payment software. The Monero Project says merchant adoption is “continuously rising,” but the available sources do not quantify growth in 2026. The clearest stated reason for interest is financial privacy; whether accepting XMR makes sense for a particular business depends on customer demand, integration needs, and how it handles and converts payments.

Is Monero acceptance actually growing in 2026?

The Monero Project says merchants “have come to value the financial privacy that Monero brings” and that “merchant adoption is continuously rising.” That is the project’s characterization, not a measured growth rate. The available sources do not establish an audited count or Monero-specific time series showing how much online acceptance increased in 2026.

A directory can show that businesses are listed, but it cannot establish a trend by itself. Monero Directory reported 332 listings across 41 categories on October 7, 2026; that is the directory’s own snapshot, not an independently verified count of active merchants. Listings may be outdated, and the number does not show how the total changed over time.

Why might an online business accept XMR?

Offer customers a privacy-oriented payment option

The Monero Project identifies financial privacy as a reason merchants value Monero. A business may consider XMR if customers ask for it or prefer a payment method associated with financial privacy. The project’s statement explains its position; it is not independent research measuring merchants’ motivations.

Broader merchant attitudes toward crypto

In its 2026 Crypto Merchant Report, the National Cryptocurrency Association said 40% of surveyed merchant decision-makers named customer privacy as a reason they value accepting cryptocurrency. The online survey covered 619 US payment-strategy decision-makers in retail and ecommerce, hospitality and travel, luxury and specialty, and digital goods and gaming. It was fielded October 21–27, 2025. This finding concerns crypto generally—not Monero acceptance or growth.

Check whether the business case works locally

The sources do not quantify whether accepting XMR brings new customers, increases sales, or attracts useful traffic from merchant directories. A business should weigh those possibilities against setup and operating needs, including custody, price volatility, conversion, and the time required to manage payments. These are questions to assess for the business, not guaranteed benefits or costs established for every merchant.

How can a business accept Monero?

The main choice is between handling payments manually and automating checkout. A wallet can be enough for occasional invoices, but frequent online orders usually require a process that connects payment confirmation with order fulfillment.

Approach How it works Best fit to assess Key trade-off
Wallet address or QR code Send the customer an address, QR code, or invoice link, then check the incoming payment in the wallet. Occasional payments or a business comfortable confirming receipts itself. Requires manual handling; the merchant must decide how to identify and reconcile each payment.
Hosted payment gateway A third-party service handles some payment steps and may provide store plugins or conversion options. A store seeking a more integrated checkout without building all payment handling itself. Control, custody, settlement, geography, fees, and platform support depend on the provider’s current terms.
Self-hosted payment software The business runs payment software and connects it to a custom store or checkout. A business with the technical capacity and need for a tailored implementation. More responsibility for setup, maintenance, and payment operations.

These categories describe options, not endorsements. Provider integrations, supported platforms, fees, and availability can change; check current documentation and terms before choosing. The official Monero business comparison matrix is dated January 28, 2019, so it is historical context rather than confirmation of current support or pricing.

What should a merchant decide before accepting XMR?

  • Customer demand: Are customers asking to pay in XMR, and does the expected volume justify the work?
  • Store integration: Does the chosen option work with the existing ecommerce platform and order process?
  • Technical capacity: Can the business operate and maintain a self-hosted setup, or is a hosted service more suitable?
  • Custody and control: Who controls received funds, and what responsibilities come with that arrangement?
  • Settlement and conversion: Will the business retain XMR or convert receipts, and how will that choice fit its accounting and cash-flow needs?
  • Provider terms: Confirm current fees, supported countries, settlement options, conversion terms, and any relevant platform requirements directly with the provider.
  • Payment operations: Decide how the business will match payments to orders and handle exceptions before accepting customer funds.

Do not assume that accepting Monero automatically reduces costs or guarantees a particular settlement speed. Those outcomes depend on the implementation and are not established as general benefits by the sources cited here.

How can customers find businesses that accept Monero?

The Monero Project links to merchant directories, and Monero.com’s “Where to Spend Monero” organizes businesses by category. Monero Directory also reports listings across multiple categories. These resources can help with discovery, but a listing is a lead—not a guarantee that a business still accepts XMR or an endorsement of its trustworthiness.

  1. Use a directory to identify a possible seller, then visit the seller’s official website yourself.
  2. Check that the checkout page currently offers Monero and read the payment, refund, and delivery terms.
  3. Verify the exact checkout domain before sending funds, and be cautious if you do not already know the merchant.

The Monero Project itself advises users to do their own research before trusting a listed merchant. Directory category coverage and verification policies vary, so confirm the details with the seller rather than relying on a listing alone.
