In a 2026 postmortem, developer Debashish Ghosal reports that a small simulator classification change improved CauterRule’s golden-corpus pass rate more than four matcher changes did. The result was not a free win: false positives also increased on a near-miss corpus, and the figures describe one author’s experiment rather than a general performance expectation.
What the experiment was trying to improve
Ghosal describes CauterRule as an open-source sidecar that extracts standing rules from repeated agent failures and replay-tests them. Its golden corpus contained 10 canonical failure scenarios, including a non-fast-forward Git push, a package version conflict, a missing Docker package, a missing Kubernetes CRD, a Terraform state lock, a pytest assertion, and a deploy timeout.
The postmortem compares two parts of evaluation that can be easy to conflate: the matcher that decides whether a rule’s trigger appears in a trajectory, and the simulator that classifies what happened in that trajectory. A result can change because a trigger is found more often, because a match is labeled differently, or both.

What changed, and when
Four matcher adjustments
The author reports making four matcher changes: correcting a precision formula issue, adding distinctive phrases, expanding aliases, and raising the phrase-match threshold. The reported golden pass rate rose from 10% to 20%, while inconclusive results fell.

A simulator classification adjustment
Later, the simulator was changed to classify successful trajectories carrying recovery-related failure labels as near-misses instead of broken successes. Ghosal reports that the golden pass rate then rose from 20% to 50% for both tested models, gpt-4o-mini and llama-3.1-8b.
The sequence matters: the simulator change was applied after the matcher changes, and the figures are reported outcomes from the author’s account. They do not establish that the simulator fix alone would produce the same gain in another setup.

The post’s central lesson is that matching and classification are separate failure points. Improving trigger matching can reduce inconclusive outcomes, but a more decisive verdict is not necessarily a more accurate one. As Ghosal puts it, “A decisive verdict is not the same as a correct verdict.”

That distinction matters when a simulator treats a trajectory as a failure, recovery, or near-miss. Changing those labels can move a pass rate even if the matcher itself has not improved. Conversely, a matcher can find more relevant triggers without making the simulator’s interpretation more reliable. Evaluation should therefore track match coverage, inconclusive outcomes, classification behavior, and false positives separately rather than relying on a single pass-rate figure.
The tradeoff: stronger scores, more near-miss false positives
In the reported results, pass rates improved on both the golden and failures/positive corpora, but false positives rose on the near-miss corpus. That is a meaningful cost: a rule that fires on a recovery-adjacent trajectory may be too broad even if it helps identify more of the intended failures.

The experiment therefore supports a narrower conclusion than “the simulator fix solved the problem.” It shows that, in this reported evaluation, a classification adjustment coincided with a larger gain in pass rate than the earlier matcher work, while the near-miss results worsened. The right interpretation depends on the cost of missed failures versus incorrectly flagging recoveries.
What to do when a similar evaluation stalls
- Separate detection from interpretation. Record whether the matcher found a trigger, whether it returned an inconclusive result, and how the simulator labeled the trajectory.
- Inspect representative cases. Check successful recoveries and near-misses alongside canonical failures. A change in labels may alter reported scores without making the underlying rule more precise.
- Rerun the relevant evaluation after each material change. Compare results on the same corpus and model where possible, and keep the before-and-after state clear. An earlier report may describe a previous version of the system.
- Report the costs with the gains. Include false positives and other relevant error counts, not only pass rates or a reduction in inconclusive results.
- Reassess the bottleneck. If the score changes after a classification fix, that is evidence to inspect classification—not proof that matcher tuning or corpus design no longer matters.
What remains unresolved
Ghosal raises, but does not answer, whether expanding the reference corpus from 230 trajectories to 330–430 would help the simulator distinguish triggers that match real failures from triggers that match too broadly—or whether the triggers themselves need to be narrower. The reported figures do not establish either as the solution. That question would require further evaluation that measures both failure detection and near-miss false positives.
