Chris Brown’s “Mountain Dew” comparison is a metaphor for Gears of War: E-Day’s nostalgic appeal—and what he sees as its artificial aftertaste. In his October 1, 2026, MobileSyrup review, he describes a competently made return to familiar Gears combat that is enjoyable at first but, in his view, too conservative to carry the series forward.
What the Mountain Dew comparison means
Brown is not recommending a drink or making a literal product comparison. He uses the familiar soda as shorthand for a loud, recognizable hit of nostalgia: the game initially recalls what he liked about the original Gears of War, but the appeal grows less satisfying as the campaign continues. That is his critical metaphor, not a consensus judgment about the game.
What feels familiar—and what is new
Brown says the cover shooting, weighty weapon sounds, Lancer and chainsaw bring back the series’ familiar appeal. He also points to variable-height cover and grapples as additions. In his view, the return to recognizable Gears rhythms is enjoyable, but the additions do not amount to a meaningful new direction. These are impressions from his review, not the result of an independent comparison with earlier games.
Why the experience wears thin for him
Combat and encounters
Brown criticizes enemy behaviour that he found easy to exploit, along with invisible boundaries and recurring scripted encounters. He argues that these choices undermine immersion and make the campaign feel like a retread.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Open-zone activities
The campaign includes open-zone side activities, but Brown found them unmemorable. For him, they do not offset the familiar structure or make the experience feel more purposeful.
Atmosphere and story
Brown says the industrial-gothic city environments can look effective, yet he does not think the game sustains the horror or emotional tension it seems to pursue. He also finds the story and character development insufficiently purposeful. Those are his assessments of the campaign, rather than claims that every player will respond the same way.

Who the review recommends it for
Brown’s recommendation is mainly for dedicated Gears fans who want the pleasure of familiar cover-shooter combat. Players hoping E-Day will push the series in a distinctly new direction may be disappointed, in his view. The review does not establish how newcomers or the wider player base will respond.

Brown describes a pre-release build and personal play sessions, not controlled benchmarks. On Xbox Series X, he says the game generally looked good and felt fairly steady, with occasional stutter. On his PC—a GeForce RTX 3070, Ryzen 7 5700X and 16 GB of DDR4—he reports roughly 40–70 fps at 1080p using low settings and DLSS Ultra Performance. He hoped the retail build would perform better; his observations do not establish retail performance or what other hardware should achieve. How to read the verdict
The metaphor captures a split verdict: the familiar sounds and combat deliver an immediate nostalgic appeal, while the reviewer’s concerns about encounters, side activities, atmosphere and story keep that appeal from lasting. Brown sees a competently made throwback, but not one that does enough to move Gears forward. That is why his recommendation is narrow: it is aimed at the most dedicated fans, rather than players seeking a fresh direction.
