Old paintings crack when stresses build across their layered materials: support, ground, paint and varnish can shrink, move or become less flexible at different rates. The resulting network, called craquelure, can reveal clues about a painting’s materials and history—but cracks alone do not show that it is actively deteriorating.

What is craquelure?

Craquelure is a network or pattern of cracks across one or more surface layers of a painting. The National Gallery describes it as a pattern that develops as paint layers age and shrink; cracks may also extend into varnish. A crack may be limited to varnish, pass through paint, reach the ground beneath it, or affect several layers.

The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) uses “crack” for a surface or deeper check in varnish, paint or ground. Related terms describe particular appearances: crazing is a fine network of cracks in varnish that reduces its transparency, while drying cracks form as paint dries and are often wide enough to expose a lower layer.

Why do old paintings crack?

A painting is a layered structure, not a single sheet of paint. Canvas or wood supports the layers above it; sizing, ground, paint and varnish each have their own composition and mechanical behavior. When those materials shrink, expand or stiffen differently, stress can build and form cracks. The Canadian Conservation Institute and Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute describe how layer responses, ageing and support movement can interact.

Ageing and changing flexibility

As paint films and priming age, they may become less flexible and more brittle. A layer that once accommodated movement may then fracture under stress. Ageing cracks are not the same as cracks that appear while a paint film is drying, although more than one process may contribute to a painting’s visible pattern.

Drying shrinkage and stress transfer

As a paint or ground layer dries, it can shrink. If it cannot move freely, tensile stress may produce cracks. Research on canvas paintings distinguishes drying cracks from ageing cracks and describes how stress transfers from a substrate into an uncracked layer—or, once cracks exist, into the material between neighboring cracks.

Humidity, temperature and support movement

Moisture exchange can make a fabric support expand or contract, straining the layers attached to it. Relative-humidity (RH) fluctuations, prolonged low RH and low temperatures can also contribute to stress in paint and ground. CCI guidance says oil-painting layers are more likely to develop cracks below 35% RH and when RH fluctuates substantially. That is conservation guidance, not a universal threshold that predicts what will happen to every painting.

A 2016 study by Leszek Krzemień, Michał Łukomski, Łukasz Bratasz, Roman Kozłowski and Marion F. Mecklenburg examined shrinkage in gesso used on panel paintings under RH cycles. In the reported test range, transitions between brittle and ductile behavior contributed to progressive shrinkage; first fractures appeared after a few to 100 cycles in tested gesso layers 0.5–1 mm thick. These are experimental conditions and findings—not a timetable for the ageing of paintings generally.

What can a crack pattern tell you?

Pattern geometry can offer clues about a painting’s construction and how its materials responded to stress. A 2024 canvas study models drying and ageing cracks in relation to stress transfer. A 2024 panel study reports that the spacing of fully developed crack systems remains sensitive to paint or gesso layer thickness under its model and conditions. These findings make crack patterns useful evidence to interpret alongside other information; spacing alone cannot date or authenticate a work.

To describe a pattern carefully, consider several features together:

Do cracks mean a painting is damaged or unstable?

Not necessarily. CCI notes that some cracking of paint and ground is inevitable and does not necessarily mean a painting is unstable. Some wide drying cracks are usually stable and do not spread. The important practical distinction is whether the paint remains attached or shows signs of lifting and loss.

Cupped or lifting crack edges and active flaking indicate a greater risk of paint loss. If a painting is valuable, historic or visibly shedding paint, seek an assessment from a qualified paintings conservator rather than trying to treat the surface yourself.

How can owners monitor conditions?

A relative-humidity monitor or digital hygrometer can help an owner observe room or storage RH over time. It measures conditions; it does not control humidity or diagnose a painting. CCI guidance identifies low RH and significant fluctuations as potential stressors, so monitoring can provide useful context if a conservator is assessing a collection or its environment.
