If your NYT Connections answers do not match a friend’s, you may be looking at different daily puzzles. The New York Times says Connections is released at midnight in the player’s timezone, so “today” can mean different local dates. Match the puzzle’s date and number—not just the word “today”—before checking or comparing answers.

Why can Connections show different puzzles in different time zones?

The New York Times Games Help Center says, “The daily Connections game is released daily at midnight in your timezone.” That means the daily reset follows the player’s local time, rather than one universal midnight such as midnight Eastern Time. NYT Games Help: Connections

Because local midnight arrives at different moments, players in different time zones can use different calendar dates when they talk about the daily game. One person may call a puzzle “today’s” while another still calls it “yesterday’s.” This does not by itself establish that every player worldwide sees a different puzzle at the same moment; the practical issue is that local dates and labels can differ. TechRadar describes this date mismatch in its September 29, 2026 Connections guide.

How do I identify the right Connections puzzle?

  1. Open the game. Note the date and puzzle number displayed, if available. Use those identifiers instead of relying on “today.”
  2. Find the matching guide. Look for an answer or hint page labeled with the same date and number. For example, TechRadar’s guide identifies the September 29, 2026 puzzle as game #1206. That example shows why checking both identifiers is useful; it is not a permanent number for that date across all publishers’ conventions.
  3. Check the guide’s timezone convention. Dated answer pages may use a reference timezone for their “today” shortcut. The nyt.today guide says its current-day shortcut follows the U.S. Eastern Time calendar day. That is the guide’s convention, not the NYT’s stated release rule.
  4. Compare like with like. When sharing answers with someone else, exchange the displayed date or puzzle number first. If either differs, you are not necessarily discussing the same daily puzzle.

Where can I find an older Connections puzzle?

The NYT says its Connections archive includes puzzles dating back to June 12, 2023. Access is for All Access and Games subscribers; the Help Center does not describe the archive as free. Use the archive when you need a past puzzle rather than a current-day answer page. NYT Games Help: Connections

Can playing after midnight affect my streak?

The NYT Help Center warns that finishing a puzzle after midnight local time can break a streak and begin a new one. It also says streaks are counted based on the puzzle played on its release day. If streak status matters, follow the current guidance in the game or Help Center rather than assuming a puzzle’s date label alone determines how it counts. NYT Games Help: Connections
