The “giga-nostril” is a viewer-given nickname for a conspicuous dark area around a character’s nose in Nvidia’s Starfield DLSS 5 demonstration—not a confirmed new nostril or a technical diagnosis. Nvidia showed the before-and-after images in its March 16, 2026 announcement. The dispute is about what the preview appears to do to character faces and artistic style, and whether developers can shape or disable the effect.
What is Nvidia DLSS 5?
Nvidia describes DLSS 5 as real-time neural rendering intended to add photoreal lighting and materials to game scenes. According to the company’s March 16, 2026 announcement, the system uses each frame’s color and motion vectors, then generates lighting and materials anchored to the game’s original 3D content. Nvidia says the result is consistent from frame to frame and gives developers controls for effect intensity, color grading, and masking.
That is more specific than calling it a beauty filter: Nvidia presents DLSS 5 as a rendering technology, not a feature designed simply to beautify characters. But its stated purpose does not settle how well the system preserves a particular game’s intended look.

What is the Starfield “giga-nostril”?
It is a joke about the appearance of a character in Nvidia’s Starfield before-and-after demonstration. Futurism’s March 21 report noted that the image came from Nvidia’s own presentation and described viewers’ reaction to the conspicuous dark area around the character’s nose. “Giga-nostril” and “yassification” are audience descriptions, not Nvidia’s terminology.
#1 Best Overall
- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
The nickname does not establish that the rendering literally created an oversized nostril, nor do the cited reports verify what caused the dark area. It captures a reaction to how the face looked in the published comparison.
Why did the demo draw criticism?
Viewers and game-industry voices objected that the demonstration appeared to alter character faces and the visual style of scenes, raising a broader concern: a system intended to add realism may also change details artists designed deliberately. WIRED reported criticism from developers and artists, including one artist’s view that the perceived effect took away from original character-design intent. Nvidia’s stated goal of adding lighting and materials and critics’ concerns about the result are different claims; neither, by itself, establishes how a finished game will look.

The concern is also about control. Nvidia says developers can adjust intensity, color grading, and masking. In a comment quoted by the Associated Press, the company said developers have “full, detailed artistic control over DLSS 5’s effects to ensure they maintain their game’s unique aesthetic.” Those controls describe Nvidia’s position on how the technology can be managed; they do not erase viewers’ criticism of the particular preview.
What did Bethesda say about Starfield?
Bethesda characterized the footage as an early look and said its art teams would adjust the lighting and final effect. In a response reported by PC Gamer on March 17, 2026, the studio said: “This is a very early look, and our art teams will be further adjusting the lighting and final effect to look the way we think works best for each game. This will all be under our artists’ control, and totally optional for players.”

Nvidia announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, listed Starfield among supported titles, and said the technology would arrive in fall 2026. That was a planned release window, not confirmation of a specific launch date. The available announcements and reports establish neither a verified Starfield launch nor final consumer hardware requirements or implementation details.
