North American dealerships turned to paper and other manual processes in June 2024 because cyber incidents at CDK Global disrupted the dealer-management systems many relied on for sales, service, inventory, accounting, and customer records. Dealerships kept serving customers where they could, but the outage did not establish that customer data had been stolen: the scope of any data access was still unknown in the contemporaneous statements.
What happened to CDK Global in June 2024?
CDK Global provides dealer-management system (DMS) software used for core dealership work, including customer appointments and records, vehicle information, sales, service, inventory, and accounting. That central role meant an interruption to CDK’s systems affected more than a single website or customer-facing tool. TechCrunch reported on June 20, 2024 that CDK told customers an additional incident occurred late on June 19. CDK spokesperson Lisa Finney confirmed that the company shut down most systems as a precaution while it assessed the situation.
At the time, CDK had not described the nature of the original attack, and the relationship between the original incident and the later one was unclear. The cited reporting does not establish an official CDK confirmation of ransomware, so it is more accurate to describe the events as cyber incidents and system shutdowns.
Why did dealerships use pen and paper?
When a dealership’s DMS is unavailable, staff may lose access to the usual digital workflows and records they use to coordinate sales, service visits, vehicles, and back-office tasks. Manual forms, notes, and other alternative processes can keep some work moving, but they do not restore the speed or integrated records of the software. The sources describe workarounds rather than a single standard paper procedure, and they do not identify a particular physical product as necessary.

The effect varied by dealership. Global News reported July 2, 2024 that Ford and Stellantis dealers were among those affected and that some Stellantis dealerships resorted to pen and paper for deals and other processes. Those examples show why paper was used, but they do not establish how many dealers used it across North America.
How dealerships kept operating
Dealership groups described continuing business through alternate procedures rather than simply closing. The available examples cover different operational functions, but they do not provide a common measure of disruption or loss, so their impact should not be ranked against one another.

Was customer data stolen in the CDK outage?
That was unknown in the statements cited during the outage. On June 24, AutoCanada said the full scope of the incident—including whether a threat actor had accessed customer or vendor data held by CDK—was not yet known. TechCrunch reported June 20 that CDK had not answered questions about possible data exfiltration. These reports confirm operational disruption; they do not confirm either that data was stolen or that no data was accessed.
Travelers Insurance issued a June 2024 advisory about impersonation and social-engineering concerns, urging caution around CDK-related access requests. That was an insurer’s incident advisory, not a definitive forensic finding about what attackers accessed.

How restoration proceeded
Recovery was gradual. On July 2, 2024, Global News reported CDK’s statement that most system connections were live and that full restoration was anticipated by late Wednesday or early Thursday. That was CDK’s forecast as reported on July 2, not an independently audited confirmation of the final restoration time. It describes the recovery outlook at that point in 2024, not CDK’s present-day system status.

CDK’s December 30, 2024 summary of its dealership personnel and market research said 35% of auto dealers experienced a cyberattack or incident in 2024, and 92% said it resulted in a negative financial or operational impact. These are CDK’s survey findings, not independent incident counts and not measurements of the June CDK outage alone. CDK Global’s 2024 summary provides the figures and their context.

The June disruption illustrates why a dealership’s dependence on shared operational software can turn a provider incident into a business-continuity problem. The cited sources do not establish the attack’s complete technical scope, a dealership-by-dealership impact count, or whether customer or vendor data was exfiltrated.
