Nike’s newly announced three-shoe race-day system names Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly—not Vaporfly. That omission means Vaporfly is not part of this particular named trio; it does not establish that Nike has discontinued the shoe. Nike describes Apex as its pinnacle marathon racer, with four Air Zoom units arranged in two stacked pairs and zero-drop geometry. Its headline “up to 40% more energy return” figure is Nike’s comparison with Alphafly 3 in a men’s size 10, not an independently verified advantage for every runner.
Why isn’t Vaporfly in Nike’s new race-day system?
Nike’s September 30, 2026 announcement names three shoes in its “race-day system of speed”: Apex, Alphafly 4 and Swooshfly. Vaporfly is not listed among them. The announcement therefore defines a new three-shoe system, not a complete inventory of Nike’s road-running shoes. What makes Nike Apex different?
Nike describes Apex as a marathon racing shoe built around cushioning, propulsion and a redesigned platform. Its announced construction includes four Air Zoom units in two stacked pairs, ZoomX LT foam, a carbon-fibre Flyplate and a Flyknit X upper. Nike also specifies a wider outsole and rocker geometry.

The four Air Zoom units are arranged as two stacked pairs. Nike says Air remains central to its approach because it provides lightweight cushioning, responsiveness and energy return while maintaining performance over a marathon. That is the manufacturer’s rationale; the cited announcements do not supply independent testing of the shoe’s performance over a full race.

Zero drop and 40 mm stack
Nike specifies a 40 mm stack height at both the heel and forefoot, describing Apex as zero-drop. In practical terms, the stated measurements put the heel and forefoot at the same stack height; they do not by themselves establish how the shoe will feel or perform for an individual runner.

Nike says Apex delivers up to 40% more energy return than Alphafly 3 in a men’s size 10. The comparison is limited by all three qualifications: “up to,” the Alphafly 3 baseline and the specified shoe size. It should not be read as a guaranteed improvement for all sizes or runners. The cited sources do not provide independent lab results or runner trials validating the figure.
