A visible space in JSX source does not guarantee that the rendered page will contain it. In a debugging report about Next.js 16.2.4, Daniel Pertu traced missing spaces to a specific combination of JSX layout and HTML entities, then reported finding 166 matching text runs across 88 files in his project. That result is an author-reported finding, not evidence that every Next.js or SWC build has the defect.
What happened in the reported Next.js build?
Pertu says a visual audit of CogniPrep uncovered text rendered as “Word analogiesgive a pair…” even though the JSX source appeared to include a space after the preceding element. The report concerns the SWC compiler context used by Next.js 16.2.4 in his project; it does not establish that all Next.js releases or SWC builds behave the same way. Daniel Pertu’s report
The missing space was not attributed to a general rule that JSX removes spaces between elements. In Pertu’s transform tests, it occurred only when three conditions coincided:
- The JSX text run began on the same line as a preceding sibling element.
- The text run continued across a newline.
- The text run contained an HTML entity, either named or numeric.
In his test variations, removing any one of those conditions preserved the leading space. He also reports that an ' entity after an inline link triggered the behavior, while a literal quote character did not. These are results from the author’s tests in the stated version context, not a general guarantee about other compiler versions or source patterns.

Why can correct-looking JSX produce incorrect rendered text?
JSX is transformed before it becomes browser-rendered output. The source editor shows the characters and line breaks you wrote; it does not prove that the compiler emitted the same text content. When rendered text contradicts the source, inspect the compiled output and verify the actual text node rather than assuming the browser discarded a visible space.
As Pertu puts it, “The source looks right” is not evidence; the compiled output is. The distinction matters in debugging: a source-level whitespace fix is useful only after establishing where the space disappears—in the source, during transformation, or later in rendering.

How did the author count the affected text?
After finding the visible defect, Pertu wrote a scan using the TypeScript compiler API to identify JSX text nodes matching the reported pattern: leading whitespace, a newline, an entity, and placement on the same line as the preceding sibling. He reports that the scan found 166 text runs in 88 files among 898 .tsx files in the commit before the fix, and zero matching cases in the current tree after remediation. These are project-specific counts reported by Pertu in 2026, not independently audited statistics.

The scan is useful as an example of turning a single visual bug into a targeted source-tree check. Its criteria were tailored to this reported mechanism. The report does not establish it as a universal JSX whitespace linter or show that it detects every way whitespace can go wrong.

What fix did the project use?
Pertu’s repair was to make the leading space explicit with a JSX expression container:
<strong>Word analogies</strong>{' '}
give a pair and ask for the word that completes a second
This expresses the space as a JavaScript string between the element and the following text, instead of relying on the multiline text run that matched the reported pattern. The author says he applied the scan across the project rather than correcting only the first sentence that exposed the problem.
How should you investigate a similar missing space?
- Capture the exact output. Record the affected rendered text and identify the source JSX around the missing space.
- Record the build context. Note the Next.js version, whether the build uses Next’s bundled SWC, the relevant package versions, and the build or development mode. Pertu’s comparison is specific to the SWC context used by Next.js 16.2.4 and standalone
@swc/core1.16.13. - Check the source pattern. Look for text that starts on the same line as a preceding sibling, crosses a newline, and contains an HTML entity. Treat that combination as a lead based on this report, not proof of the same cause.
- Inspect transformed output. Determine whether the space exists in the emitted text. If the output already lacks it, focus on the JSX transform; if it is present there, continue investigating later rendering behavior.
- Try an explicit space and retest. Insert
{' '}where the visible separation belongs, rebuild using the affected context, and confirm the rendered result. - Search for matching cases across the codebase. A targeted TypeScript compiler API scan can help find related patterns, but validate its matches and misses against your own source and compiler behavior.
What the SWC comparison does—and does not—show
Pertu reports that standalone @swc/core 1.16.13 preserved the space in the same test case where the Next.js 16.2.4 compiler context did not. That comparison points to a difference between those tested contexts; it does not establish a general SWC defect, identify the cause of the difference, or show that later Next.js releases are affected or fixed. A useful reproduction therefore needs the exact versions, JSX layout, entity, and build context—not just the label “SWC.”
