Neutrinos can pass through your body because they interact with matter only rarely—not because they never interact. The discovery that won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics was that neutrinos change flavor as they travel, a phenomenon called neutrino oscillation. It showed that neutrinos have mass.

What the Nobel Prize recognized

On 6 October 2015, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the Physics Nobel for the discovery of neutrino oscillations. The prize was shared by Takaaki Kajita of Japan and Arthur B. McDonald of Canada, whose work with large research collaborations provided complementary evidence from atmospheric and solar neutrinos. The Academy’s official motivation was “for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass.” (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 6 October 2015)

Neutrinos are elementary particles that are difficult to detect because they rarely interact with matter. A detector can register one when a neutrino does interact; the challenge is that most pass through without leaving a signal. The popular claim that neutrinos pass through the human body “without a trace” is therefore shorthand, not an absolute rule. (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 2015)

What it means for a neutrino to change flavor

Neutrinos are detected in types called flavors, including electron and muon neutrinos. Oscillation means a neutrino produced or identified as one flavor can later be detected as another. It is not that the particle vanishes and a different particle takes its place: the flavor measured at detection changes as the neutrino travels.

Quantum mechanics accounts for this through the relationship between flavor states and mass states. A neutrino’s quantum wave contains components associated with different masses. As those components travel, they evolve differently and can interfere, changing which flavor is observed. Oscillation can occur only if neutrinos have mass. This discovery established that neutrinos are not all massless; it did not determine a precise absolute mass for each neutrino. (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, scientific background, 2015)

How two experiments supplied complementary evidence

Experiment Neutrinos studied Key observation Why it mattered
Super-Kamiokande, Japan Atmospheric neutrinos produced when cosmic rays interact with the atmosphere Fewer muon neutrinos arrived from below, after crossing Earth, than from above. The difference associated with travel path supported the conclusion that neutrinos change flavor in transit.
Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), Canada Solar neutrinos The electron-neutrino component was lower than expected, while the measured total across neutrino types was near expectations. The missing electron neutrinos had changed flavor rather than disappeared.

The results addressed different parts of the puzzle, so the experiments were complementary rather than competitors. Kajita presented Super-Kamiokande’s atmospheric-neutrino result in 1998. SNO’s convincing solar-neutrino results followed in 2001 and 2002, according to the Nobel scientific background. (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 2015)

Super-Kamiokande: a path-length pattern

Cosmic rays striking the atmosphere produce neutrinos. Super-Kamiokande compared atmospheric neutrinos arriving from different directions. Those arriving from below had crossed Earth and travelled farther than those coming from above; the detector found fewer muon neutrinos among the longer-path group. That pattern supported flavor change during travel. At the 2015 Nobel ceremony, committee member Olga Botner described the detector as holding 50,000 tonnes of water and lying 1,000 metres underground. SNO: accounting for the solar neutrinos

Earlier measurements detected fewer solar electron neutrinos than calculations predicted. The Nobel announcement described up to two thirds as “missing” in measurements on Earth; this referred to the deficit in the electron-neutrino measurements, not neutrinos disappearing from existence. SNO could measure the total solar-neutrino flux across types. The total was near expectations even though the electron-neutrino component was lower, indicating that neutrinos had arrived in other flavors. SNO was two kilometres underground, Botner said in the 2015 presentation speech. (Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 6 October 2015) (Olga Botner, 10 December 2015)

Why this discovery changed physics

The solar-neutrino deficit had left physicists with a question: were fewer neutrinos being produced than expected, or were the measurements missing neutrinos that had changed type? SNO’s total-flux result, together with Super-Kamiokande’s travel-path pattern, supported the second explanation. Neutrino oscillation connected the experimental observations to a fundamental property: neutrinos have mass.

The award recognized evidence built by major collaborations, not isolated work by two individuals. Kajita and McDonald were honored for key contributions to the experiments that made the discovery possible. The Nobel presentation speech summarized the shared theoretical idea: particles travelling through space can be described as waves. (Olga Botner, Nobel Committee for Physics, 10 December 2015)
