NASA’s new lunar surface suit is the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), developed by Axiom Space under a NASA services contract. It builds on NASA’s xEMU prototype work, but it is designed for the demands of working on the Moon—not as a replacement ISS suit. NASA sets the technical and safety requirements and retains mission authority; Axiom is responsible for developing and providing the suit system.
Why does NASA need a new spacesuit for the Moon?
The legacy Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) is the suit used for spacewalks outside the International Space Station. NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) said in its April 2026 audit that the EMU’s design originated more than 50 years earlier, had not undergone a major redesign in the preceding 20 years, and carried significant safety risks. The audit said lunar missions require an entirely new suit with expanded capabilities. The distinction is about the work and environment: the ISS EMU was designed for spacewalks in microgravity, while lunar surface exploration requires equipment suited to movement and tasks on the Moon.
The lunar surface also brings hazards beyond vacuum. NASA Science describes lunar soil as irregular, sharp, and fine, making it a challenge for spacesuit engineers. That is why a Moon suit must be designed with the surface environment in mind, not simply adapted from an orbital spacewalk suit. NASA’s explanation is available in Spacesuits for Artemis: Moon Dust and Mobility.
What is the AxEMU, and what is it meant to improve?
AxEMU stands for Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit. Axiom Space is developing and providing the lunar suit system for NASA, drawing on NASA’s Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) prototype work and NASA-held experience, expertise, and data. NASA says astronaut feedback on comfort and maneuverability informed the design. The agency’s program description is in Spacesuit for NASA’s Artemis III Moon Surface Mission Debuts.

NASA says the AxEMU is intended to improve range of motion and flexibility so astronauts can reach more lunar terrain, while continuing development of life support, pressure garments, and avionics using modern technology. NASA also says the suit is designed to accommodate at least 90 percent of the U.S. male and female population. That is NASA’s stated design accommodation target, not a published result showing that a particular share of astronauts has completed fit testing.
Axiom’s own overview describes adjustable sizing, soft and hard joints, redundant components, suitability for lunar dust, and compatibility with microgravity interfaces. These are the company’s descriptions of its design and intended performance, not independent findings that all capabilities have been verified. See Axiom Suit.

How does the AxEMU differ from the ISS suit?
| Comparison | ISS EMU | Lunar AxEMU |
|---|---|---|
| Primary setting | Spacewalks outside the International Space Station in microgravity. | Lunar surface exploration and work. |
| Design basis | A legacy design that NASA’s OIG said originated more than 50 years ago and had not had a major redesign in the preceding 20 years, as of its April 2026 audit. | Axiom’s suit system builds on NASA’s xEMU prototype experience and data, with NASA requirements for lunar missions. |
| Key demands | Designed for the ISS spacewalk context. | Mobility over lunar terrain, surface tasks, and protection suited to a challenging lunar environment that includes sharp, fine soil. |
| Status in the cited reporting | The OIG audit identified significant safety risks in the legacy suit. | NASA reported substantial pressurized testing in February 2026, but that update did not establish completion of final flight qualification. |
The suits address different operational needs; AxEMU is not simply a newer version of the ISS EMU for the same kind of mission.
Who is making the suit, and how does NASA’s contract work?
NASA uses a commercial-services model for its next-generation spacesuits. Axiom develops the suit system and NASA purchases moonwalking services. NASA defines technical and safety standards and retains authority over astronaut training, mission planning, and approval of service systems. NASA says the model also allows the provider to pursue other commercial customers, while giving NASA rights to use contract-developed data and technologies for future exploration.

NASA awarded spacesuit services contracts to Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace in May 2022. The OIG described them as firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity, milestone-based contracts with a combined maximum value of $3.1 billion. That is the maximum across the contracts, not an amount spent on AxEMU alone. The audit reported that NASA and Collins mutually agreed in June 2024 to descope Collins’s task orders because of the agreed schedule, leaving Axiom as NASA’s single provider at the audit’s April 2026 point in time. Details appear in the OIG report, NASA’s Acquisition of Next-Generation Spacesuit Services.
What AxEMU testing had NASA reported by February 2026?
In an update dated February 12, 2026, NASA said Axiom had completed an internal technical review and reported more than 850 hours of pressurized testing with a person inside the AxEMU. NASA described that figure as testing conducted by NASA and Axiom; it is evidence of substantial development work, not by itself proof of completed flight qualification. NASA’s update is NASA Moon Mission Spacesuit Nears Milestone.

NASA also described early testing in its Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, where the suit was weighted to match lunar gravity in a 40-foot-deep pool so teams could assess function and movement. Separately, teams were evaluating task performance at different suit pressures with NASA’s Active Response Gravity Offload System, which simulates reduced gravity. NASA explained that higher suit pressures reduce acclimation time, leaving astronauts more time for lunar surface activity. The February update reported ongoing evaluation, not a completed flight demonstration.

Why did the OIG say schedule readiness remained a concern?
NASA’s OIG April 2026 audit said NASA’s original plan to demonstrate the lunar suit in 2025 and the microgravity suit in 2026 was overly optimistic, with delays of at least a year and a half for both. For the lunar mission, the audit discussed NASA’s then-current plan for a 2028 landing and said suit availability posed a challenge. Those dates describe the schedule assessment in that report; they should not be treated as a guarantee or as confirmation of NASA’s schedule after April 2026.

For a crewed lunar mission, a suit must be ready as a complete, approved system—not merely have undergone extensive component or pressurized testing. The February 2026 NASA update and the April 2026 OIG schedule assessment describe different snapshots: reported testing progress does not erase the audit’s concern about when the suit would be ready for mission use.
When will astronauts use the AxEMU?
The sources cited here do not establish a current launch or first-use date beyond the OIG’s time-stamped discussion of NASA’s then-current 2028 lunar landing plan. They also do not establish that AxEMU has completed final flight qualification. NASA’s mission schedule may change, so the audit’s date should be read as an April 2026 assessment rather than a present-day promise.
