A Stripe webhook marked failed is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Start with the individual delivery attempt’s HTTP status and response in the Stripe Dashboard: a timeout calls for faster acknowledgement, while a connection-denied error points to URL, DNS, reachability, or network rules. The 96% figure is specific to this incident; it is not a Stripe-wide failure rate.
What the 96% failure rate does—and does not—tell you
The figure describes the incident in the title, but it cannot identify the cause by itself. To interpret it, establish which events and attempts counted as failures, the numerator and denominator, the endpoint, whether it was operating in test or live mode, and the time window. Use the endpoint’s Dashboard history or your own logs for those details. Stripe’s troubleshooting guidance does not publish 96% as a general webhook failure statistic.
Find the failed delivery’s actual response
- In the Stripe Dashboard, open Webhooks and select the endpoint showing failures.
- Open its Failed tab, select an event, and expand the webhook attempt.
- Record the attempt’s HTTP status and response, and compare other failed attempts rather than assuming they share one cause. Stripe’s webhook delivery troubleshooting guide separates timeout, connection-denied, redirect, HTTP error, and TLS problems.
Fix the problem indicated by the attempt
If the attempt timed out
A timeout means Stripe established a connection to your server, but the server took too long to respond. Stripe expects a prompt HTTP 2xx acknowledgement that the event was received. Return that acknowledgement quickly, then do slow work—such as downstream API calls or lengthy processing—afterward, often by placing the event on an internal queue. Stripe describes this expectation in its guidance on timed-out webhook deliveries.

Also check server health and logs around the attempt, including CPU or memory pressure and storage capacity. An endpoint can be reachable yet still respond too slowly when it is overloaded or blocked doing work in the request handler.

If Stripe could not connect
A connection-denied error points to reachability rather than slow event processing. Check that the endpoint URL is correct, its hostname resolves to the expected address, and the endpoint is publicly reachable. Review firewall and network rules to ensure they do not block Stripe’s published webhook IP addresses. Stripe’s connection-denied troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
If the attempt returned another HTTP status or a TLS error
Use the actual response to follow the matching troubleshooting path. Redirects (3xx), client or server errors (4xx or 5xx), and TLS errors are distinct from timeouts and connection failures; changing queue behavior will not resolve a bad URL redirect or a TLS configuration problem. Start from Stripe’s status-specific delivery troubleshooting rather than treating every failed attempt alike.

Check retries and endpoint health after the fix
Stripe retries failed webhook deliveries automatically with a backoff mechanism, but retries are not a substitute for correcting an unhealthy endpoint. After deploying a change, review subsequent attempts and the endpoint’s status in the Dashboard. Stripe says continued unresponsiveness or errors for several days can result in delivery stopping and the endpoint being disabled; see Stripe’s explanation of webhook retries.
