I can’t honestly explain why these 27 projects stopped without the project list and the author’s account of what happened. “Dead” can mean an old commit, no releases, an explicit end-of-life notice, or a repository deliberately archived as read-only—and those are not the same thing. What the available evidence can establish is how projects are measured, how some get revived, and what maintainers can do when they decide to stop.
What does “dead” mean for a GitHub project?
A quiet repository is not automatically an abandoned one. A project may have no recent commits but still work as intended; it may have stopped receiving releases without an announcement; its maintainer may have explicitly deprecated it; or its repository may be archived on GitHub. Those states describe different things: activity, maintenance, communication, and repository settings.
A 2020 study by Jailton Coelho, Marco Tulio Valente, Luciano Milen, and Luciana L. Silva modeled maintenance activity using project signals rather than a single universal definition of “dead.” Commit history, issues, pull requests, and forks can help describe activity, but none alone reveals the maintainer’s reasons or the project’s future. The study’s classifications apply to its dataset and model, not to every GitHub repository. Read the study.

Research can offer context, but it cannot explain why any particular author stopped working on a particular repository.
#1 Best Overall
- In a 2019 study of 1,932 selected popular GitHub projects, researchers classified 315 (16%) as abandoned. Of those, 128 (41%) survived after new core developers assumed development. The sample was selected, so these figures are not a platform-wide abandonment rate or a forecast for an individual project. Read the study.
- Among successors surveyed in that study, their own use of the software was the most common motivation they cited. Lack of time and difficulty obtaining push access were the main reported barriers. These are successor-maintainer responses, not explanations from the original authors of the projects—or of the 27 projects in this title.
- A separate 2020 study classified 16% of 2,927 projects it had identified as active as unmaintained over a one-year interval, using its own maintenance model. That result describes the study’s sample and method, not an official GitHub-wide rate. Read the study.
Together, these findings show why “abandoned” need not mean “gone forever”: a project can change hands and continue. They do not establish the reasons behind any one project’s ending.
Why might a maintainer choose to stop?
Maintainers’ circumstances differ, and the examples GitHub published are individual decisions, not a universal list of causes. Brett Terpstra described projects that rely on APIs or external applications becoming more costly to maintain when those dependencies break. Olga Botvinnik deprecated prettyplotlib and chose to contribute to Seaborn, which she considered more polished in some respects. Ben Johnson retired BoltDB and pointed users to the BBolt fork rather than transfer the original project, citing his personal connection to the project bearing his name. Read GitHub’s maintainer examples and guidance.
These stories illustrate different trade-offs—dependency upkeep, a better-fitting alternative, or a decision about stewardship. They cannot be used to infer why another maintainer stopped. For the 27 projects named in the headline, the author’s own account is the evidence needed to make that explanation.

What should a maintainer do before archiving a repository?
Archiving is a specific GitHub repository state, not just another word for neglect. GitHub says an archived repository’s content becomes read-only; contributors with access can still fork or star it. To change repository content again, the repository must be unarchived. See GitHub’s current archiving documentation.
Rank #3
Before archiving, GitHub recommends closing issues and pull requests and updating the README and repository description so users understand the status. A clear notice can say whether the project is no longer maintained, point to an alternative or successor when one exists, and explain whether contributions or a handoff are welcome.
There is no single notice period required by the guidance. Terpstra said that even when he has decided to stop work immediately, he leaves a 30-day window open to handle issues and help users transition. That is his practice, not a universal rule. GitHub’s sunset guidance includes his account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can readers responsibly conclude about these 27 projects?
Without the repository URLs and the author’s firsthand explanations, the causes behind the 27 endings are not established. Nor is it clear which projects were formally archived, handed to a successor, left online without active maintenance, or later revived. Those distinctions matter: a repository can be inactive without being archived, and a project described as abandoned can later survive under new maintainers.
