Movies can look choppy on an OLED TV because fast pixels reveal the gaps between film frames rather than smearing motion across them. Most films are shown at 24 frames per second, and a TV holds each frame on screen until the next one arrives. During a slow pan, your eyes follow the moving scene while the image stays still, making the motion look like a sequence of small jumps.
Does OLED response time cause judder?
Not by creating missing frames. Pixel response time describes how quickly a pixel changes from one state to another. OLED pixels switch quickly, which reduces transition smear. The film’s frame rate and the display’s frame-holding behavior are what produce the choppy impression; OLED’s clarity can make that effect easier to notice.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Pixel response time: How quickly pixels change. Faster transitions reduce blur caused by pixels taking time to change.
- Stutter: The perceived choppiness of low-frame-rate motion, particularly when each frame remains visible for a relatively long time.
- Judder: Uneven motion cadence caused when frames are repeated for unequal durations, often because the source frame rate and display refresh rate do not divide evenly.
A 24 fps movie can be repeated evenly five times on a 120 Hz display, but even repetition does not turn it into higher-frame-rate motion. It can avoid uneven cadence while the original motion still appears stuttery. A 60 Hz presentation may repeat 24 fps frames unevenly, adding judder. RTINGS’ stutter test and 24p playback test explain the distinction between frame holds and cadence.

Why are panning shots especially choppy?
In a slow camera pan, details move steadily across the scene, and your eyes track them. But a 24 fps movie updates the picture only 24 times each second. On a sample-and-hold display, each frame remains visible between updates. With little transition blur to soften the change from one frame to the next, the movement can appear as distinct jumps. High-contrast scenes can make the effect more noticeable, and people differ in how sensitive they are to it. RTINGS’ explanation of stutter covers this frame-hold effect.
What can you change to make movie motion look smoother?
First check that the playback chain is handling the film’s 24p signal correctly. Then, if the motion still bothers you, try the TV’s motion interpolation at a low setting. Change one option at a time while viewing the same slow pan so you can judge the trade-off.

- Confirm the source and playback path. Check the streaming app, player, and TV picture mode for correct 24p handling. Results depend on the incoming signal and the display’s processing; a TV cannot recover motion information that the source never captured.
- Try mild motion interpolation. This processing creates intermediate frames to make movement appear smoother. It can also cause artifacts in difficult scenes, and stronger settings may give movies the unnaturally smooth, video-like “soap opera” look. There is no ideal setting for everyone. See RTINGS’ motion-interpolation test for the benefits and limitations.
- Treat black-frame insertion as a different option. BFI inserts dark intervals to reduce persistence blur; it does not create intermediate motion detail. Depending on the TV’s implementation, it can make the picture flicker or look dimmer, and its behavior may vary with frame rate. It is not interchangeable with interpolation. See RTINGS’ BFI test.
- Use the manual for your exact TV model. Feature names and availability vary. For example, Sony’s support guidance notes that picture options depend on the model and describes film-mode and motion-blur settings. Consult Sony’s TV picture-settings guidance or your manufacturer’s documentation.
Which motion setting is right for you?
| Option | What it changes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Interpolation off or low | Preserves more of the original 24 fps film cadence. | Slow pans may still look stuttery. |
| Interpolation higher | Adds generated frames for smoother-looking movement. | Can introduce artifacts or make films look unnaturally video-like. |
| Black-frame insertion | Uses dark intervals to reduce persistence blur. | May reduce brightness or produce visible flicker; it does not add motion detail. |
If you prefer the original film look, keeping interpolation low or off is reasonable. If smoother pans matter more, a mild interpolation setting may be a better compromise. Test a scene you know well and adjust a single setting at a time; menu names and behavior depend on the TV model. RTINGS’ discussion of cinematic motion places these preferences in context.
