Morgan Stanley said it did not see worsening U.S. data-center power constraints putting Nvidia’s or Broadcom’s 2027 forecasts at risk. The bank’s assessment, reported by Reuters on October 5, 2026, is that those companies have more flexibility to manage chip placement, expand across geographies, and coordinate with data-center and power suppliers. It is not a claim that either company is immune to delays—or a guarantee of its future performance.

Why Nvidia and Broadcom may be less exposed

The key distinction is where a company sits in the supply chain and how much flexibility it has when a data-center project cannot proceed on schedule. Reuters reported Morgan Stanley’s view that Nvidia and Broadcom have better visibility into where chips will be placed and can work with data-center operators and power suppliers as projects develop. The bank also cited the ability to expand across geographies.

That flexibility could make it easier to adjust deployment plans than for suppliers whose components are ordered for a particular project and may remain unused if its data center is delayed. Quartz relayed a further possibility—that chips could be redirected to projects with secured power—while attributing that idea to Benzinga. It should be treated as a secondary explanation, not as a confirmed outcome.

Morgan Stanley’s judgment is specifically that power-related bottlenecks do not put Nvidia’s or Broadcom’s 2027 forecasts at risk. It does not establish that their forecasts will be met, or that the companies face no effects from power limits.

Which suppliers could face disruption if deployments slip?

Reuters reported that memory, optical, power-management, and analog components are among the categories most exposed to inventory disruption if customers cannot deploy chip capacity as planned. The risk is conditional: if a project’s power or construction schedule slips, customers may push out or cancel component orders, leaving suppliers with inventory or orders that no longer match deployment timing.

  • Memory: could be affected if planned data-center capacity is delayed and customers defer related orders.
  • Optical components: could face the same timing mismatch when a project cannot bring planned capacity online.
  • Power-management and analog components: may be exposed to order changes tied to delayed deployments.

The reporting identifies these categories as vulnerable scenarios; it does not say that cancellations have already occurred or rank individual suppliers by risk.

How large is the estimated U.S. data-center power gap?

Morgan Stanley estimated a net U.S. data-center power shortfall of 34% through 2028, equivalent to 32 gigawatts, after accounting for measures such as behind-the-meter generation and fuel cells. Reuters reported the estimate on October 5, 2026. It is a bank estimate of the gap, not a measured shortfall that has already occurred. Reuters report reproduced by Investing.com.

Power is only one part of the deployment challenge. Morgan Stanley Research cited Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory data showing that projects built in 2022 took five years from interconnection request to commercial operation, compared with two years for projects built in 2015 and less than two years in 2008. Those figures describe historical interconnection timelines for the cited project cohorts; they are not a universal estimate of how long a data center takes to build today. What the power constraint means for data-center investment

Morgan Stanley Research estimated about $2.9 trillion in global data-center capital spending from 2025 through 2028, including roughly $1.7 trillion in the United States. In its model, the global total comprises approximately $1.3 trillion for construction and $1.6 trillion for hardware. These are estimates, not audited spending totals or confirmed commitments.

The report notes that construction spans multiple years and that some capital is spent before a facility’s operating year. It also expected some workloads to be served outside the United States if domestic power is insufficient. The $2.9 trillion figure therefore describes a broad, modeled investment outlook; it does not mean every planned facility will be completed on schedule or that all spending is equally exposed to U.S. power limits. How to read the “shielded” claim

“Shielded” is best understood as a relative forecast-risk judgment from Morgan Stanley, as reported by Reuters—not as protection from every consequence of the power crunch. The bank’s reasoning points to flexibility in placement, geography, and coordination. By contrast, component suppliers may be more exposed when their customers’ deployment plans change and orders are delayed or canceled.

The evidence supports that supply-chain distinction, not a ranking of individual companies or an investment recommendation. The power-gap and spending figures are estimates, while the supplier disruption described in the reporting remains conditional on projects failing to deploy capacity as planned.

Quartz’s October 6, 2026 report also discusses the assessment and its attributed explanation about redirecting chips to projects with secured power.
