Mesh networks can fail in a crowd because nearby phones must share limited radio airtime while people and their connections keep moving. Sending every message along many redundant routes can make that congestion worse. Amigo is a research system designed to address those problems by combining group-security protocols with a routing approach that organizes nearby phones into geographic cliques. Its reported results come from simulations, however—not a demonstrated, ready-to-use messaging service or a proven deployment at a mass protest.

Why a crowd can make a mesh network less reliable

A mesh is a multi-hop network: devices pass traffic onward so a message can travel beyond the radio range of the phone that sent it. That can help when internet access is unavailable, but it does not create unlimited capacity. In a dense gathering, many nearby phones compete to transmit over shared radio spectrum. At the same time, people move, so links that worked moments earlier may disappear or change.

One tempting response is to forward a message through as many devices and routes as possible. Redundant forwarding may help a message find a path in some conditions, but in a crowded radio environment it also consumes airtime. More transmissions can mean more contention and collisions, slowing or preventing delivery. The underlying problem is not simply that there are too few devices; it is that crowd movement, changing links, and shared-radio contention interact.

Conventional wireless mesh systems face trade-offs between interference and spatial reuse, while multi-hop forwarding adds routing overhead and latency. Those general principles apply to wireless meshes, but household Wi-Fi mesh routers and enterprise access-point networks are not the same system as a phone-to-phone messaging network intended to work without centralized internet infrastructure.

What Amigo changes about phone-to-phone messaging

Amigo is a research prototype for secure group messaging between nearby phones, aimed in part at situations such as protests where internet service is shut down or unavailable. The paper describes off-the-shelf Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct as possible link-layer radio technologies. A phone relays messages locally; the network does not depend on a central internet service to carry them.

Routing through geographic cliques

Rather than rely on indiscriminate redundant forwarding, Amigo groups nearby devices into geographic “cliques.” Ordinary nodes communicate with a designated leader, and leaders exchange messages between cliques. The design is intended to adapt routing to the way people cluster and move, while reducing the unnecessary transmissions that can aggravate contention.

Group security alongside routing

Amigo also combines its routing design with decentralized continuous group key agreement. The researchers describe support for group membership changes, outsider anonymity, forward secrecy, and post-compromise security. In practical terms, these are intended security properties for maintaining a group as members join or leave and for limiting the consequences of certain key exposures.

As Tushar M. Jois, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at City College of New York, put it to IEEE Spectrum, “The story is the cryptography alone won’t save us.” The point is that secure group messaging still has to get messages across a congested, changing radio network. Strong cryptography by itself cannot resolve collisions, routing overhead, or broken links.

How Amigo differs from common mesh approaches

The contrast is about design and evaluation, not a universal ranking of every mesh product. The Amigo paper argues that earlier approaches can miss the combined effects of private group messaging, realistic mobility, changing links, and physical radio contention.

Dimension Redundant or flooding-style forwarding Amigo research design
Network load Multiple devices may forward the same traffic, creating redundant transmissions and additional contention. Geographic cliques use designated leaders to relay messages between groups; the paper reports performance improvements over prior approaches in its evaluated scenarios.
Mobility Some prior evaluations, according to the paper, do not adequately represent protest crowd dynamics. Evaluated with protest mobility models; this is simulation evidence, not field validation.
Radio effects Results can be misleading if nearby devices’ contention and collisions are omitted from the model. Simulations include low-level radio effects, including collisions, according to the paper.
Group security Security capabilities depend on the particular system; the paper does not establish a single capability set for conventional mesh approaches. Designed for decentralized group key management, membership changes, outsider anonymity, forward secrecy, and post-compromise security.
Scale and evidence Depends on the specific system and evaluation; a general field-performance comparison is not stated in the paper. Simulation results show gains in evaluated scenarios, while the paper identifies unresolved scalability and robustness challenges, including scaling to protests with thousands of participants.

These distinctions matter when interpreting claims that one mesh approach “works better.” A test that assumes simplified movement or ignores radio collisions may not predict what happens when thousands of people and phones share a crowded space.

What the simulations establish—and what they do not

The Amigo paper reports simulations using protest mobility models and low-level radio effects. Within the scenarios evaluated, its optimizations improve performance over prior approaches. The researchers also identify fundamental scalability and robustness problems that remain, including the challenge of supporting protests with thousands of participants.

That is evidence about a research design under simulated conditions, not proof of successful operation in a real protest. The reported work does not establish guaranteed message delivery, resistance to radio jamming, anonymity against every possible threat, or independently verified safety in field use. Nor does it establish that a complete production-ready Amigo messaging app is available. The project page and repository provide benchmarking and simulation code, rather than a supported consumer app or dedicated hardware product.

Can phones communicate if the internet is shut off?

Phones can communicate directly over local radio without centralized internet infrastructure if they have a compatible system and can establish usable links. A mesh can relay messages across multiple phones, extending communication beyond a single direct connection. That is not the same as restoring internet access: a local mesh does not by itself provide access to websites, cloud services, or people outside the mesh.

Amigo is a research effort toward secure local group messaging in such conditions, not evidence that any phone will automatically form a usable network during a shutdown. Participants would need compatible software and radio support, and the network would still face the limits of radio range, movement, contention, and scale.

Why Wi-Fi 7 mesh results are not an Amigo benchmark

Enterprise Wi-Fi improvements can provide useful background about interference, but they answer a different question. In March 2026, the Wireless Broadband Alliance reported enterprise Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation field-trial results with AT&T, RUCKUS Networks, and Intel, including up to 116% higher uplink throughput under interference and up to 66% lower uplink latency for real-time traffic in the tested configurations. Those partner-reported results concern enterprise WLAN equipment and specific trial setups, not Amigo, protest crowds, or phone-to-phone mesh messaging. They should not be used to predict Amigo’s performance.
