For many on-device large language model (LLM) workloads, fitting model weights and inference state into a phone’s memory—and moving that data fast enough—can be a bigger constraint than raw processor speed. The practical limit depends on the model, context length, runtime, and device; memory is not the bottleneck in every phase. To judge whether a phone can run a model well, look beyond its processor: measure memory use, prompt handling, generation speed, and task quality on the target device.
Why does an LLM need so much phone memory?
An LLM generates text one token at a time. It needs access to its model parameters, or weights, as well as temporary inference state. The weights are only part of the working-memory budget: the key-value (KV) cache holds attention-related information for prompt and generated tokens, and can grow as the context gets longer.
That creates two related constraints. The phone needs enough memory to keep the relevant data available without destabilizing other apps, and it needs sufficient bandwidth to move that data during inference. Qualcomm describes parameter reads as a bandwidth bottleneck for the autoregressive token-generation workload in its engineering discussion. That explanation applies to the workload it describes; it does not mean every phase or every phone-based AI task is limited by bandwidth rather than compute.
What is the difference between memory capacity, bandwidth, and processor speed?
- Capacity is how much working data the device can hold. Model weights, runtime state, and the KV cache all compete for memory.
- Bandwidth is how quickly data can be moved between memory and the processor or accelerator. Repeatedly accessing weights can make bandwidth important during token generation.
- Compute speed is how quickly the CPU, GPU, or other accelerator performs operations. It matters too, but a fast processor cannot compensate for data that does not fit or arrives too slowly.
The bottleneck can change by phase. Processing a prompt (prefill) and generating subsequent tokens (decode) are different workloads, so processor speed alone does not predict the whole experience.

How do quantization and KV-cache techniques help?
Quantization reduces the weight footprint
Quantization represents model weights using fewer bits, which can reduce the memory needed to store them and may improve practical inference speed. It is not a free reduction: accuracy and performance depend on the model, quantization method, runtime, and device. Apple describes mixed low-bit techniques for its on-device models and, in its 2025 technical report, 2-bit quantization-aware training. Qualcomm describes an INT4 quantization-aware training and distillation effort; the company reported less than a one-point perplexity drop and less than a 1% accuracy drop in its particular evaluations. Those figures are method- and evaluation-specific, not a guarantee for other models or tasks.
KV-cache optimization reduces runtime pressure
Because the KV cache stores attention state for tokens in the context, a longer prompt or conversation can increase memory use even when the model weights do not change. Apple documents KV-cache update and sharing optimizations in its engineering materials. Such techniques can make a particular implementation more efficient, but the cache’s size and behavior still depend on the model and runtime.

Flash offloading trades memory pressure for data movement
Apple’s “LLM in a Flash” research loads model parameters from flash storage into DRAM as needed. In the evaluated approach, Apple reported handling models up to twice the available DRAM, with speedups over naive loading of 4–5× on CPU and 20–25× on GPU. These are results from that research setup, not general phone benchmarks. Flash storage can support specialized offloading, but it is not equivalent to fast working memory, and the result should not be read as a promise that any phone can smoothly run any oversized model.
How can I tell whether a model will run well on my phone?
There is no evidence-based universal RAM threshold or model-size cutoff that applies across current phones and workloads. Devices differ in memory capacity, accelerators, operating systems, runtimes, and background memory pressure. Google notes this variation across Android devices and describes benchmarking across more than 120 representative device types through its AI Edge Portal article.

Compare the same model and workload on the actual device where possible. Google identifies initialization time, prefill speed, decode speed, and peak memory as useful operational metrics. Also check output quality on your intended tasks and how much context the setup can handle.
- Initialization time: How long the model takes to become ready.
- Prompt prefill or time to first token: How long it takes to process the input and begin responding.
- Decode speed: How quickly it generates tokens after the response starts.
- Peak memory and stability: Whether memory use causes slowdowns, app termination, or crashes. Google warns that consuming available memory can cause delays or crashes.
- Task quality and context length: Whether the model gives useful results for your real prompts and can handle the amount of text you need.
Keep the runtime, operating system, model, context length, and background apps consistent when comparing results. Otherwise, a difference attributed to the phone’s processor may actually come from software or memory pressure.

How do I run an LLM on my phone?
Use a mobile inference app or runtime that supports the model you want, then check that the model is compatible with your device and available memory. The exact steps and controls depend on the app, model format, and operating system; the sources cited here do not establish one universal installation path. Once it is installed, test a representative prompt and conversation length, then observe how quickly it starts, how fast it generates, and whether the phone remains stable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen comparing device claims, keep the conditions attached to the numbers. Apple reports that, with its described model and optimizations, an iPhone 15 Pro achieved about 0.6 millisecond per prompt token for time-to-first-token latency and a generation rate of 30 tokens per second. Qualcomm reported up to 20 tokens per second for an optimized Llama 2-7B Chat demonstration on a phone powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. These are separate vendor demonstrations with different model and optimization contexts, not a head-to-head comparison or expected performance for every phone.
Does running an LLM need more memory or a faster processor?
It can need both, but memory is often the harder practical constraint: the weights and growing inference state must fit, and moving them can limit token generation. A faster processor helps only when the model, runtime, and memory system can feed it effectively. For prompt processing and other phases, the balance can differ, so assess the complete workload rather than treating processor speed as a proxy for capability.
