If media is silent while your phone or computer still makes other sounds, the media volume may be controlled separately—or playback may be routed to the wrong output. Start by playing the affected audio, raising the media slider, and checking the app’s mute and output settings. Then follow the steps for your device below.
First, identify what is silent
Before changing settings, narrow down the problem. The answers determine which check is most useful:
- Is every sound silent, or only music, video, and games? If calls, alerts, or system sounds still play, check the media volume category rather than the general ringer or alert controls.
- Is one app silent or are all apps silent? A single silent app points toward its own mute, volume, or output settings. If every app is affected, check the device-wide media level and selected output.
- Does sound work through headphones but not the built-in speaker? That suggests a speaker, obstruction, or output-selection issue rather than a muted media file.
- Did the problem start after connecting Bluetooth, changing a setting, or installing an update? Check the active output route first, then consider settings or software changes.
Volume controls and output selection are separate: a slider can be high while the app is muted or sound is being sent somewhere else.

Android: raise Media volume and check playback destination
- Play the affected song, video, or game audio.
- Press a volume button and expand the volume controls if needed. Raise Media volume; Ring, Notification, Call, and Alarm volumes control different sound categories.
- If the phone is paired with more than one Bluetooth device, open the media destination control and check Play media to. Select the speaker or device you intend to use.
- If all sounds are absent on a Samsung Galaxy, check Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements → Mute all sounds. Then review Settings → Sounds and vibration → Volume and check whether Do Not Disturb is affecting the situation.
Google notes that volume-button behavior depends on what is happening on the device; playing media can change its active volume, while idle controls may behave differently. The “Play media to” instructions apply to Android 12 or later, and menu names can vary by manufacturer. See Google’s Android volume and playback controls. Samsung says its menu labels and layout vary by model and software version; see Samsung’s Galaxy sound troubleshooting guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
iPhone or iPad: adjust playback, not just alerts
- Start playing the silent media, then press the side volume buttons or adjust the volume in Control Center.
- Check that the sound is not being sent to a Bluetooth device or another selected playback destination.
- If the built-in speaker is silent, check Silent mode and Focus or Do Not Disturb. Remove any case or film that covers the speaker opening, and check for visible dirt or obstruction.
- Open the Ringtone and Alerts slider and test whether the speaker produces sound. Apple says that if you hear no sound during this test or the speaker control is dimmed, the speaker may need service.
On iPhone, the side buttons control media while audio is playing, but control ringer and alerts when nothing is playing. That can make an adjustment seem ineffective if the wrong sound category is changing. Apple explains this behavior in its iPhone volume guide and provides speaker troubleshooting steps.
Windows: check the app mixer and selected output
Only one app is silent
- Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
- Find the affected app. Make sure it is not muted, raise its volume slider, and check that its output device is the one you want.
- If the app remains silent, Microsoft suggests restarting the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder services, then checking for an updated audio driver.
System sounds can work even when an individual app is muted or routed elsewhere. Follow Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting guidance. Its page covers Windows 10 and 11; Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 2025-10-14.

- Open Settings → System → Sound and select the intended output device.
- Confirm that the output is not muted and check that the correct playback device is selected as the default.
- On Windows 11, try the Get Help audio troubleshooter. If sound is still absent, Microsoft suggests disabling audio enhancements and checking for driver or device problems.

- In Settings → System → Sound, explicitly select the Bluetooth device as the output. A connection does not necessarily mean it is the active playback device.
- If selecting it does not help, Microsoft’s next steps include checking the device’s audio format, removing and pairing it again, confirming A2DP support for higher-quality streaming, checking Windows Update, and restarting the PC.

If the basic checks do not restore sound
- Test another app or media file. If other playback works, focus on the original app’s mute, volume, and output settings.
- Try another available output. If sound works through headphones but not the built-in speaker, the issue may be limited to the speaker or its opening. Headphones are an optional diagnostic check, not a required purchase.
- Restart the device. This can help after a temporary software or audio-service problem, particularly on a Windows PC.
- Use the support steps for the exact device and software version. Menu names differ across Android manufacturers and Galaxy models, and Windows instructions vary by version. If a device-level speaker test remains silent, the speaker may require service.
