validate_vast passing XML supplied to an agent confirms only that the supplied document passed the checks the validator ran. It does not, by itself, show what a live VAST tag URL returns now or establish that its wrapper chain reaches an Inline ad. Those are separate checks: validate the XML you have, fetch the live URL, then inspect each wrapper hop.
What does a successful validate_vast result establish?
It establishes a result about the document provided to that call. The exact MCP server and version behind a particular validate_vast deployment matter: without confirming its schema or runtime trace, it is not safe to claim that every such call fetches URLs, follows wrappers, or never follows them.
VAST is an XML-based format for structuring video ad tags and passing ad metadata from an ad server to a video player, as the IAB VAST overview explains. The IAB Tech Lab VAST Tag Validator describes its tool as a validator for VAST XML and lists support for versions 2.0, 3.0, and 4.1, including Wrapper use cases. A validation result should therefore be read as a statement about the document and checks involved—not as proof of a successful ad playback.
Why can the live tag still have wrappers?
A VAST Wrapper points to another VAST response through its VASTAdTagURI. That next response can itself be another Wrapper or an Inline ad. The IAB VAST schema defines this relationship.

Consequently, XML that passes validation can still be a Wrapper rather than the final Inline response. A live tag URL may also return a response different from the XML pasted earlier. Microsoft’s VAST Check documentation notes that each redirect to another VAST document adds time before the actual creative is reached.
How to troubleshoot the XML and live URL separately
- Validate the exact XML in hand. Record or retain the XML supplied to the agent and the validator result. This checks that document under that validator’s rules; it does not establish the current response at a URL.
- Fetch the live tag URL. Use a workflow that accepts and fetches a URL, rather than treating pasted XML as a substitute for a live request. The VASTlint validation guide describes XML validation and live URL testing as separate workflows.
- Inspect each Wrapper hop. For every returned Wrapper, follow its
VASTAdTagURIand examine the next VAST response. Continue until the response is Inline or the chain fails or cannot be followed. A hop-by-hop inspector is useful when the task is to identify where a chain stops; the same VASTlint guide describes wrapper inspection separately. - Check what the tool actually did. If the MCP result is meant to certify URL fetching or wrapper traversal, verify the deployed tool’s schema or runtime trace shows that behavior. Do not infer it solely from a successful XML-validation status.
What validation does not prove about playback
A schema or rule check is not the same as confirming a live response, following every redirect, or successfully playing the ad. Keep the conclusion as narrow as the check: say that the supplied XML passed the validator’s checks, rather than that the live tag works, unless fetching, chain inspection, and playback were separately established.
