Low liquidity means there is relatively little crypto available to trade near the current price. A large market order can use up that nearby quantity and fill the rest at worse prices; on an automated market maker (AMM) decentralized exchange, a large swap changes the pool’s asset balance and can move its price. Check the spread and estimated average fill before confirming, and choose an order type and trade size that fit your need for speed and price control.

What slippage is—and how it differs from the spread

Slippage is the difference between the price you expected when placing a trade and the price at which it actually executes. It can be unfavorable or favorable. The bid-ask spread is different: it is the gap between the available buy and sell quotes. A trade can incur the spread and then experience additional slippage if available liquidity is consumed or the market moves before execution. Coinbase explains these terms and the effects of low liquidity and activity in its slippage and spread guide.

Why low liquidity makes execution prices move

On an order-book exchange

A market order matches with available limit orders on the opposite side of the book. The price shown at the top may cover only a small quantity. If your order exceeds that quantity, the remaining portion matches at the next available prices. Your average fill can therefore be worse than the last traded price or the quote you saw when submitting the order. The outcome depends on the size and prices of orders in the book, not just on the asset’s headline trading volume. Coinbase describes multi-price market-order fills and slippage in its Markets Trading Rules.

On an AMM decentralized exchange

An AMM prices swaps using the assets held in a liquidity pool rather than matching the trade against a conventional visible order book. A swap changes the pool’s asset ratio; a larger trade relative to the pool’s liquidity generally causes greater price impact. DEX interfaces may let you set a slippage tolerance—the maximum price deviation you will accept before the transaction is rejected. This setting does not add liquidity or guarantee a favorable fill. Binance Academy explains these mechanics in its guide to crypto slippage; exact labels and interface behavior vary by DEX.

How to reduce the impact before you trade

Inspect the actual pair and order size

  • Check the spread and, where available, the quantity waiting at nearby prices for the specific asset pair and venue.
  • Compare your order size with the available depth. A venue’s total volume alone does not show how much can be executed near the current price.
  • Review the estimated average fill price and any displayed slippage estimate before submitting. These are snapshots, not promises: prices and available orders can change.

Coinbase says its interface displays slippage and average-price estimates for market orders; the availability and presentation of estimates depend on the platform. See its slippage and spread guidance.

Choose an order type for your priority

Approach What it can do Trade-off
Market order Prioritizes immediate execution against available liquidity. May fill at multiple prices, so the final average can differ from the displayed quote.
Limit order Sets the maximum price you will pay to buy, or the minimum price you will accept to sell. May remain open or fill only partly. Coinbase says a limit order fills at its specified price or better; this does not guarantee a fill. See Coinbase order management.
Smaller or scheduled executions Can reduce how much of the nearby liquidity a single execution consumes. Some platforms offer time-weighted average price (TWAP) scheduling. Later portions remain exposed to market movement, and additional executions can affect total fees. Availability and scheduling behavior depend on the platform; neither guarantees a target price. Coinbase describes TWAP in its order-types documentation.

Set DEX slippage tolerance deliberately

A tighter tolerance rejects a swap if the execution price moves beyond your chosen limit, but it can also lead to a failed transaction. A looser tolerance accepts a wider deviation and therefore a potentially worse execution price. DEX labels, defaults, and routing differ, so check the transaction preview rather than treating a particular setting as universal or as protection against poor liquidity.

How to decide which control fits

  • Need speed and accept price uncertainty: a market order may fit, but check its estimated average fill and nearby depth first.
  • Need a price ceiling or floor more than immediate completion: consider a limit order and account for the possibility that it will not fill.
  • Have a large order and time to execute: consider smaller or scheduled executions only if the extra time and potential fees are acceptable.
  • Swapping through an AMM: compare the expected price impact with the pool’s liquidity and set tolerance with the possibility of either rejection or a worse fill in mind.

Coinbase Institutional’s May 27, 2022 study, “Temporary market impact vs order book liquidity,” examined selected regulated venues and Coinbase Prime for larger USD-notional orders. Its observations are specific to that study’s venues, order sizes, and date; they should not be read as typical slippage rates for today’s crypto trades.
