Louisville forward LJ Wells was reported ineligible for the 2026–27 season after the Kentucky Court of Appeals dissolved a temporary injunction that had allowed him and other student-athletes to compete while their lawsuit continued. The October 2, 2026, action removed that interim protection; it did not decide the underlying eligibility claims.

Why was LJ Wells deemed ineligible?

Wells’s ability to play was tied to a temporary injunction in Wells v. NCAA. On October 2, a three-judge Kentucky Court of Appeals panel dissolved that injunction. WHAS11 reported that Wells and the other covered plaintiffs—38 student-athletes in all, including Louisville teammate Seth Trimble—were again ineligible for the 2026–27 season. WHAS11’s October 2 report describes the reported effect of the ruling.

The Courier Journal reported that the panel viewed the preliminary relief as disrupting the status quo. It identified the judges as Sara Walter Combs, Christopher McNeill, and Will Moynahan. The appellate order itself is not available in the cited reporting, so the explanation and the reported scope of the decision should be attributed to those outlets rather than treated as a direct reading of the order. The Courier Journal’s account says the lawsuit remained unresolved.

What the October 2 ruling did—and did not—decide

Dissolving a temporary injunction ends interim court protection; it is not the same as a final judgment on the merits. The lawsuit challenging the eligibility rules was still pending according to contemporaneous coverage. The October 2 ruling therefore changed Wells’s reported ability to compete while the case proceeded, but it did not finally resolve whether the challenged rules were lawful or whether Wells should ultimately be eligible.

The reported ruling applies to the student-athlete plaintiffs covered by the injunction. It should not be generalized to athletes in unrelated cases or other jurisdictions.

How Wells arrived at Louisville

Louisville announced Wells’s addition on September 14, 2026, as a fifth-year transfer after four seasons at Northern Kentucky. The university said he started all 33 games in his senior season and averaged 15.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game. He shot 55.4% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range. In three Horizon League tournament games, he averaged 22.3 points and 8.7 rebounds, earning a place on the All-Tournament Team. Louisville’s announcement provides those statistics.

How NCAA eligibility rules fit into the case

The NCAA Division I Cabinet adopted an age-based eligibility model in June 2026, effective August 1, 2026. The NCAA describes the model as a five-year period tied to age and enrollment, with limited exceptions. But the transition is not a blanket promise that every athlete receives five seasons: for athletes with eligibility remaining after 2025–26 and prospects enrolling full time during 2026–27, NCAA guidance allows institutions to apply either the previous rules or the age-based model, whichever is more favorable to the athlete. The legislative record sets out the effective-date and transition conditions. NCAA’s announcement of the model and its legislative record explain the change.

That transition backdrop does not, by itself, settle Wells’s individual case. The court injunction governed whether covered plaintiffs had interim permission to compete; the NCAA rules and the institution’s eligibility certification are distinct parts of the situation. Wells’s status changed in the reported account because the appellate panel dissolved that temporary court protection, not because the ruling finally resolved every question under the new model.

What happens next?

As of the October 2 reports, the eligibility lawsuit was continuing, and no Wells-specific next hearing date was established in those accounts. A later court order, hearing, or official statement from Louisville could change the status. The reported ineligibility is therefore a snapshot of the case after the appellate action, not a final determination of Wells’s eventual eligibility.
