For most TV owners, no. A widely shared September 2, 2026 report describes one person using Claude Code and Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to disable apps on an Android TV, but that single experiment does not show the approach is safe, supported, or likely to make your television faster. Built-in controls on Google TV and Android TV can handle most of the clutter people actually see, and they come with documented behavior.
What was actually reported
The report, published by Tom’s Hardware, describes AI engineer Mert Cobanov’s work on his own Android TV. According to the account, he enabled developer options, let Claude Code connect to the television over ADB, disabled a set of apps, installed the FLauncher home-screen launcher, and shortened animation durations. The report says the work was done without root access.
Cobanov described the result as smoother than when the television was new. He said the set was four years old at the time. That is his own assessment, shared on X and repeated in the article. The report includes no controlled before-and-after measurement, no list of which apps were disabled, and no test on other models.
Why the Claude name does not mean Claude supports TV cleanup
The Claude help documentation available to readers covers the Claude app for Android, not a television feature. Anthropic’s Install Claude for Android article is about getting the phone app running. It does not describe managing system packages on a TV.

In this case, the capability came from Claude Code combined with ADB, a developer tool that talks to the device at a lower level than the remote and menus you normally use. That is a different path from anything a TV owner would find in the television’s settings, and it is the reason the decision carries more risk than the headline suggests.
What the anecdote does and does not show
- It shows that an agent with ADB access was able to disable apps, install a launcher, and change animation settings on one reported device.
- It does not show that the changes made the TV faster. The smoother feel is an unmeasured personal impression.
- It does not show that the same list of changes is safe on another brand, model, or software version.
- It does not show that the changes will survive a firmware update. Readers asking about this should treat it as an open question.
Cobanov also said that nothing was uninstalled, so every step could be reversed, and that the agent kept a record of what it disabled so that a request to re-enable everything would be enough. That is his claim about his own setup. It has not been independently tested, and disabling is not the same as removing: a disabled system component can still be needed by something else on the device.

Lower-risk options to try first
Most of what makes a TV feel crowded can be handled with the controls Google documents. The exact labels depend on your device and software version, so use these as a starting point and check Google’s Google TV Help: How Google TV & Android TV work page for your setup.
Recommended Free Tools
Google TV
- Remove apps from the Apps tab. Uninstalling an app there is the documented way to clear out software you do not use.
- Consider Apps only mode. Found under Settings > Accounts & Profiles, this mode reduces some recommendation surfaces. Google states that Search and Assistant are unavailable in this mode, and that some recommendations can still appear depending on Web & App Activity and individual apps.
Android TV
- Remove apps from Settings > Apps. This is the documented route for uninstalling software on Android TV.
- Customize the home screen. Depending on the device, you can change some rows or reorder apps. Labels differ between manufacturers, so the menu you see may not match the documentation word for word.
Ads and the advertising ID
Many owners assume that resetting or deleting the advertising ID will stop ads. It will not. Google’s Change ad settings page says: “You can’t turn off ads, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across installed apps.” Deleting the ID removes ads based on that ID, but apps can still show ads based on other factors.

Play Protect should stay on
Google recommends keeping Google Play Protect on for better security. According to Google’s Protect your TV from harmful apps with Google Play Protect help page, it scans for potentially harmful apps and may warn about them, disable them, or remove them. Play Protect is not a tool that reviews ADB commands or approves a list of system packages to disable, so turning it off to make room for custom changes does not make those changes safer.
Built-in controls compared with ADB changes
| Question | Built-in TV controls | ADB-based system changes (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Documented by the platform? | Yes. Google’s Google TV and Android TV help pages describe these controls. | Not documented in the Google help pages cited here. The method comes from one personal experiment. |
| Device and version risk | Menu labels and options vary by device; use the documentation for your model. | Specific to the device and software tested. No cross-model safety data was reported. |
| Reversibility | Not stated for every control in the cited help pages; check each feature’s own help text. | Cobanov says nothing was uninstalled and the agent kept a record. This is his account and has not been independently verified. |
| Effect on recommendations | Apps only mode reduces some recommendations but disables Search and Assistant. | Not stated in the report. |
| Evidence for speed gains | Google does not claim a speed gain from these controls in the pages cited here. | Anecdotal, self-reported impression. No benchmark was reported. |
If you still want to experiment
Some owners will try ADB changes regardless. If you do, treat it as a developer task with real risk, not a cleanup button:

- Design Features: 26 feet long-distance remote control with 0.2 seconds fast response time, 50,000 times presses for durability, and requires 2 AAA batteries (batteries not included in package)
- Confirm the exact TV model and software version, and look for manufacturer guidance for that combination before changing anything.
- Write down every change you make, including the app name and the state it was in before.
- Change one thing at a time and use the television for a few days before making the next change.
- Know how to restore the defaults you changed before you start, and do not rely on an AI agent’s memory as your only record.
- Do not copy package lists from forums or videos. A package that looks like bloatware on one device can handle system functions on another.
Where a streaming device fits
If the real problem is a slow or cluttered built-in interface, the Tom’s Hardware report notes that a 4K streaming stick or streaming box can serve as an alternative. That approach adds another device and another remote, and it does not clean up the television itself. It is an option for people who want a different interface, not a substitute for managing the TV’s software.

There is no evidence in the sources cited here that Claude provides a supported way to manage Android TV packages, that any universal list of removable apps is safe, or that a specific television will stay faster after an update. Until a manufacturer or platform documents an approach for your model, the lower-risk route is the one Google describes in its own help pages.
