Letten is Dandelion’s homeland, and setting The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past there gives its writers a way to explore the bard’s responsibilities and how they affect Geralt. In an interview reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, CD Projekt Red story director Marcin Blacha described Letten as “a really natural way to go.”
Why is Songs of the Past set in Letten?
Blacha’s explanation, as attributed in reporting on the interview, centers on Dandelion. Letten is his homeland, so the expansion can bring the bard back to a place tied to his life before Geralt arrives as an outsider. The unfamiliar setting also gives the story room to develop new situations rather than relying on places Geralt already knows.
The choice is therefore presented as a narrative opportunity, not as a disclosed contest between specific candidate locations. Blacha’s reported reasoning points to the stories that Letten makes possible: Dandelion confronting responsibility, and the consequences of that responsibility for his friendship with Geralt.
What brings Geralt out of retirement?
The reported premise is that urgent family business draws Dandelion into trouble, prompting Geralt to leave retirement and help his old friend. The journey is framed around their relationship: Dandelion’s homecoming is the reason for the return, while Geralt encounters the region from the perspective of someone who does not know it.

What is the new threat?
The interview coverage teases a “long-dormant evil” and a curse, but does not identify the threat or explain the curse in detail. It also keeps the expansion’s ending under wraps. Those hints establish danger, not its source or plot mechanics; the reporting does not support a more specific answer.
