Lac des Brenets, on the France–Switzerland border, had fallen to a reported 735.34 metres above sea level on 1 October 2026—14.66 metres below its expected level. AFP attributed the decline to a combination of underground drainage through geological fissures, below-average rainfall and repeated heatwaves. The 4 October report said a 1906 low-water record was expected to be exceeded soon; it did not confirm that the record was broken.
Where is Lac des Brenets, and what happened?
The lake is formed by the Doubs at Les Brenets, where the river begins marking the France–Switzerland border. The Doubs rises in the French Jura. By 4 October 2026, AFP described Lac des Brenets as having largely dried up after a hot, dry period.
On 1 October, AFP reported a water level of 735.34 metres above sea level, 14.66 metres below the expected level. The report put the decline at about 20 to 22 centimetres per day. Those are dated figures from AFP’s report, not a current or continuing measurement.
Why is Lac des Brenets drying up?
AFP identified several contributing factors: water draining underground through fissures, rainfall below average, and repeated heatwaves. The report did not quantify how much each factor contributed, so it does not establish a single cause or assign a share of the decline to any one of them.

Heat was part of the context: AFP reported that June, July and August 2026 were each the hottest respective month in Switzerland since measurements began in 1864. The dispatch did not provide the underlying temperature values or identify the measurement agency.
Was the 1906 low-water record broken?
AFP said the record low from 1906—15.35 metres below the reference level—was expected to be surpassed within days of its 4 October 2026 report. That was a forecast, not confirmation that the record was subsequently broken. The report does not establish what happened to the level after publication.

How did the low water affect local boat operations?
Boat operator Yvan Durig told AFP that the navigation company halted operations on 20 July 2026. Vessels and pontoons were left stranded. Durig said the lake had nine metres of depth remaining, compared with a usual 25 or 30 metres, and described 200 to 300 passengers as typical on a day in the relevant season. Those depth and passenger figures are his reported estimates, not independently audited measurements or counts.
What is being done to limit the water loss?
French and Swiss authorities formed a task force in 2022 to investigate ways to limit drainage through the fissures. AFP reported no decisive action by the time of its 4 October 2026 dispatch. The report describes an investigation, not an approved engineering project or a confirmed plan to seal the lakebed.

Durig urged action in his interview with AFP: “We must take action — indeed, be proactive — and seal the lakebed,” and “But this can no longer take years. That is simply not an option anymore.” His proposal reflects his view; the report did not say authorities had adopted it.
